Some drawings from my passport sketchbook in Bologna. What a joy to be back - my third time going to the fair and I feel like I get to know the city and the children’s book fair a little more each time. This year was extra special having spent a few days before the fair started with my wife and son, our first trip abroad as a family. Lots of espressos, pasta, pizza and spritzes. Sketching and people watching. And then the fair - it’s crazy. So many people. Lovely people who genuinely care about making wonderful things for young people. It’s bittersweet when there is so much sadness in the world and I care so much for all these young, innocent, vulnerable people. It was a privilege to be asked to contribute to the reading of The UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) at The Illustrator’s Cafe. I read Article 28, which states that children and young people have the right to education. It was a powerful, multilingual collective reading that I was so proud to be part of and then to give a talk on that same stage with Michael Rosen @iammichaelrosen (via webcam) was the icing on the cake. Thank you @bolognachildrensbookfair Grazie mille to all the wonderful people I had the pleasure of spending some time with at the fair, I look forward to seeing you lot next time X

I’m very excited to say that I’m coming to Bologna this year!!! And that Michael Rosen @iammichaelrosen and I will be giving a talk: Tuesday 14th April, 17.40 - 18.30 at the Illustrators CafĆ© @bolognachildrensbookfair Where we will discuss the research and process behind the picture book One Day @walkerpicturebooks , sharing the investigative work and sources that made the book possible. Michael will also reflect on the deeply personal connection to the story: the train to Auschwitz described in the book is the very same train on which his father’s uncle and aunt were deported. A compelling conversation exploring history, memory, and the process of uncovering the past. If you spot me please do say hello! If you’re a publisher and you’d like to talk then please reach out I’d love to meet. I’m really looking forward to this. With big thanks to our Italian publisher @edizioniel Bx

Please join us @goshcomics Friday 13th March 2026, from 7pm. To celebrate the release of Shushu. Written by Ziggy Hanaor published by @cicadabooks . We are so proud of this book and we can’t wait to share it with you. It’s the first thing we’ve worked on since releasing Alte Zachen back in 2022. A little about the book: Miri is the exhausted mother of a screaming newborn and four-year-old Frances, who refuses to give up her shushu (pacifier). When her judgmental mother-in-law, Bella, arrives, she’s more of a burden than a help; criticising mealtimes, bedtimes, and of course, the ever-present shushu. When not dispensing unsolicited advice, Bella lounges in a Valium-induced haze on the sofa. Miri is overwhelmed―not just by Bella, but by the new roles assigned to her. Her identity is subsumed in the relentless rhythm of nursery runs, dinner prep and the demands of domesticity. All the while, Frances, ever watchful, gathers her lessons in silence. This is a tender, sharp, and quietly powerful story about the isolation of motherhood, and the pacifiers – both literal and metaphorical – we pass down through generations. From the creators of Alte Zachen (Carnegie Shortlist, V&A Illustration Award Winner), this marks Cicada’s first adult graphic novel. Benjamin Phillips’ expressive hand-drawn ink illustrations breathe life into every page. Told with subtlety, wit and warmth, it explores universal themes that will resonate deeply with readers.

So happy to see that One Day by @iammichaelrosen and myself has been featured in the 2026 Read for Empathy collection. The Read for Empathy Collection brings together the best of diverse children’s literature through which young people can connect with themselves, others, and the world. With participation in Holocaust memorial activities in UK schools having seen a sharp decline over the past couple of years. I hope that the promotion of this book can help in some part to educating young people about this subject. Congratulations to all the other authors, illustrators and publishers included in the collection. @empathylabuk
