Our 3rd stop, Porto, 2nd largest city situated in Northwest of Portugal, coastal city known for its stately bridges & Port wine production. The city filled with grand architecture of churches (especially the gorgeous Azulejo blue tile work), hilly, narrow & scenic cobbled alleyways. Lots to do from shopping at the local markets, watching sunset from the riverside, wine-tasting with different cellars, coffee-tasting, eating Portuguese delights, drinking Port wine🍷, go on Douro river cruises, sun-tanning on the beach & even surfing.
Porto offers 2 different lifestyles:
- City life in Porto district itself
- Beach life in Foz do Douro & Vila Nova de Gaia (hub of Port wine industry & beaches) we like this better 🤭
Next & final stop tmrw, Lisbon, the capital of Portugal. Will see how interesting it will be 😃

Madeira, an island situated in the North Atlantic Ocean about 805km (500miles) southwest of mainland Portugal. Funchal, its capital is where we stayed, is somewhat like Waikiki, Oahu (we were told that Madeira is called the Europe’s Hawaii 😅). On the other hand, it’s also feels like Genting Highland, Malaysia with its cable car service all the way to the Jardim Monte Palace Madeira & Monte Church, almost 600m above sea level. Monte sledges are a 19th century vehicles, handmade from wicker & wood, pushed by 2 drivers down 2km route 😅
We found this interesting local fruit, called the Monstera Delicious (mixture of pineapple & banana), where its skin needs to be peel off one by one, looks like corn, can be eaten like corn or pull it out one by one 😬
Overall, we think that Funchal is a great place for vacation as the town terrain is mountain valley, narrow roads, hence long term living may not be ideal unfortunately. Food and drinks are great, we enjoyed the local Madeira Wine & Poncha for sure & seafood is the main dish in Portugal (I shall have octopus next 🤭)

This sum up our first 2 days in the region of Algarve, situated in the south of Portugal, which consists of two main townships of Faro & Lagos.
Faro is more quiet and small, whereas Lagos is more lively & more to explore. We definitely prefer Lagos over Faro 😅
Tmrw, we will head to Funchal, Madeira by flight. Another day of traveling 😅
