Episode 100. Season 4 opener.
This one is different.
For the first time on Beneath the Helmet, I sat down with my family.
My wife of over 30 years.
My two adult kids.
We talked about what itâs really like to grow up in a fire service home.
Hearing the pager at night.
Missing moments.
Popcorn dinners.
Learning to stay calm when things go wrong.
And carrying pride and worry at the same time.
This episode isnât about the job.
Itâs about the people behind it.

Most people think resilience is about bouncing back.
But what if thatâs not the full story?
In this conversation with Savio Clemente, we talk about something deeper
Adaptive resilience
Not pushing harder
Not fixing everything
But learning how to adapt while youâre in it
Savio shares his experience with cancer, relapse, and recovery
And one powerful lesson stood out
You donât always have to fix everything
Sometimes the growth comes from
Rest
Stillness
And giving yourself permission to recover
If youâve been feeling the weight lately, this one will land

Savio P. Clemente is a keynote and TEDx speaker, journalist, board-certified wellness coach (NBC-HWC, ACC), best-selling author, and healthcare leadership strategist. He works with leadership teams after disruption, when the crisis is over but performance has not fully recovered. There's a version of leadership in the fire service that looks like strength but is actually avoidance.
It's the officer who keeps command presence switched on 24/7 â at the station, off duty, in discipline conversations, at roll call. The one hat, worn everywhere. Jared Vermeulen, Fire Captain and author of The Modern Fire Officer, calls it out in this week's episode of Beneath the Helmet.
Jared talks about what it costs firefighters when the systems around them keep adding weight without adding support. He talks about the discipline conversation no one wants to have, and how to reframe it so it actually builds something. He talks about self-esteem as the foundation of leadership â not self-help fluff, but the real capacity to be vulnerable, take feedback, and stay in the room when things get hard.
He also said this: what we call soft skills are actually the hardest skills there are. And most of us would rather work ten house fires in a row than walk up to a teammate we think is struggling.
That landed for me.
What's one human skill you're still working to get better at as a leader?

Relationships in the first responder world are not simple.
Shift work. Missed time. Emotional load. Unspoken expectations.
Over time, it can create distance without either person realizing it.
In this episode, I sit down with Dr. Kristy De Leon to talk about something we donât talk about enough⌠how to stay connected when life pulls you in different directions.
One idea that stood out:
Talk about talking.
Not what you say in the moment.
How you communicate.
When you communicate.
What your partner actually needs from you.
Sometimes the strongest move is asking:
âHow can I support you better?â
Simple question. Big impact.
If youâre in the fire service, or you love someone who is, this one matters.

âIâm burnt out. Iâm burning out. I know Iâm burnt out.â
That line hit hard in this conversation.
In this episode of Beneath the Helmet, I sat down with Patrick Pianezza, the writer behind Code 3, a film that captures the real emotional weight of working in EMS.
This wasnât about Hollywood.
It was about the job behind the job.
Patrick shared how a 14-hour shift, frustration, and burnout led to a story that eventually became a film. Every call in Code 3 is rooted in real experience. Not exaggerated. Not glamorized.
Just real.
We talked about:
Burnout and not recognizing it when youâre in it
The reality of 911 calls and what they leave behind
Why dark humor can help⌠until it doesnât
The gap between talking about burnout and actually doing something about it
What first responders truly need to stay in this job long term
One of the most powerful reminders:
Take your time off.
Have friends outside the job.
Talk to someone who understands.
If youâve ever felt the weight of the job, this conversation will land.
đ§ Listen now and let me know what stood out for you.

Most people experience only a few critical incidents in their lifetimes.
First responders can experience thousands.
That changes you.
It shapes how you think, how you see the world, and how your body responds to stress.
In this episode of Beneath the Helmet, I sit down with Dennis Carradin to talk about the rescuer mentality and why so many of us stay âalways onâ⌠even when the call is over.
We talk about:
đWhy decompression is not the same as rest
đHow stress follows you home, even when you donât talk about it
đThe impact of years of calls on your health and longevity
đWhy seeking help is not a weakness
One thing that stood out:
You donât have to share every detail of a callâŚ
But saying âI had a tough dayâ might be exactly what you need.
Take a moment and ask yourself:
When was the last time you were truly off?
