I had the pleasure of meeting Editor John Bloom and shooting this portrait for my project THE GREATS BEHIND THE GREATS. John is considered by his peers to be one of the greatest British Film Editors of our time, and is one of only six to have won the Academy Award for Best Film Editing. His career includes some truly remarkable films: The Lion in Winter, Magic, Nobody’s Fool, The French Lieutenant’s Woman, Gandhi and Charlie Wilson’s War. He won his Oscar for the film Gandhi (1982), for which he also won the American Cinema Editors (ACE) Award for Best Edited Feature Film. He was nominated for another two Academy Awards: The French Lieutenant’s Woman and A Chorus Line. John has, furthermore, been nominated for three BAFTA Awards for Best Editing: The French Lieutenant’s Woman, Gandhi, and Under Fire. In 1999 the ACE awarded Bloom its Career Achievement Award. Marjorie Wallace CBE [Countess Skarbek] is the chief executive of the mental health charity SANE, which she founded in 1986 in response to her ‘Forgotten Illness’ campaign in The Times. She is also an award-winning investigative journalist, author and broadcaster who has contributed extensively to television, radio and newspapers.  She is author of the book and screenplay ‘The Silent Twins’, a story of elective mute identical twins; the book ‘On Giant’s Shoulders’, the story of a family who adopted a thalidomide child; and writer and presenter of BBC documentaries including ‘Whose Mind Is It Anyway?’ and ‘Circles of Madness’. Marjorie has been a respected, credible voice on disability, mental health and charitable issues for many years and is widely regarded as having been one of the strongest influences on government policy on community care. In 1997 she was elected an Honorary Fellow of the Royal College of Psychiatrists.  In 2001 she was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Science by City University, London, in recognition of her achievements in mental health, and in 2004 she was made a Fellow of University College, London. In 2008 she was included among sixty people judged by Health Service Journal to have been central in shaping today’s NHS. She was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in the 2008 New Year Honours. This is the artist Sophie Windham. Sophie was brought up in the bucolic Gloucestershire countryside, which inspired her lifelong love of nature. She comes from a family of artists, including her mother, the painter Annette de Mestre and her aunt, the painter Rachel Windham, both of whom were fundamental in her development as an artist. After training at the Byam Shaw School of Art and the Chelsea Art School in London, she worked as a children’s book illustrator, and in 1997 was nominated for the Greenaway Medal. During the early years Sophie travelled extensively, living in Venezuela and Los Angeles, where she continued to work and exhibit. In 1994 she moved to the Welsh Borders with her family and for the last decade has been exhibiting her work in Hay-on-Wye and London. BRUCE ROBINSON - 2023. Bruce is an English actor, director, screenwriter and novelist. He famously wrote & directed the British cult classic WITHNAIL AND I, along with other films such as ‘How to Get Ahead in Advertising’, ‘Jennifer 8’, and ‘The Rum Diary’ – starring Johnny Depp. Robinson also wrote the screenplay for the film THE KILLING FIELDS (1984), which received an Academy Award nomination, and won him a BAFTA. As an actor he has worked with Franco Zeffirelli, Ken Russell and François Truffaut. Robinson is also a successful author. His first published work was the semi-autobiographical novel The Peculiar Memories of Thomas Penman (1998). In 2000, Smoking in Bed: Conversations with Bruce Robinson, edited by Alistair Owen, was published - made up of a selection of interviews given by Robinson. Since becoming a father, Robinson has also written two children's books, The Obvious Elephant (2000) and Harold and the Duck (2005), both illustrated by his wife, Sophie Robinson. Following the latter, he spent 15 years collecting and researching materials pertaining to the mystery of Jack the Ripper, which later became his acclaimed book: They All Love Jack: Busting the Ripper (2015).
