NEW RELEASE: Ben Rempel & Justin Gunter - Live in Prospect Park [SEA-041] Listen or download the full album on Bandcamp! Also available on transparent C-36 cassettes, limited to 25 copies 📼 _____________________ On a July day in Brooklyn’s Prospect Park, percussionists Ben Rempel (LA) and Justin Gunter (NY) set up their drum kits for an all-day, outdoor recording session. Here, they arranged and improvised a series of hypnotic percussion duets, based on short polyrhythmic compositions by Rempel. Even without the confines of a studio, the duo managed to record the rich physicality of their drums in detailed high fidelity, capturing every transient and overtone. More importantly, they “embraced the blending of our music with the rhythms and sounds of the larger park environment”. The entrancing results feel both immersive and spacious; the sounds of wooden sticks hitting synthetic membranes form a rhythmic undercurrent, opening into a broader sonic space that includes the wind, birds, rustling trees, and the occasional siren. #percussion #improvisation #polyrhythms #polyrhythmic #improvisedmusic #percussionduo #cassette #tapelabel #fieldrecording #naturalrhythms #composition

Yuma is someone who seems to redefine sound every time I hear him perform, and there's no question that hearing Ben, Yuma, and Elijah play together will be an irresistible treat. It’s the beginning of outdoor season for the Ministry! Join us at the underpass of Bickford Park for a night full of blistering percussion and high-octane improvisation. Travelling from the states behind their debut album “Live at Prospect Park”, it was only fitting that we’d host the percussion duo of Ben Rempel & Justin Gunter at one of our favourite parks in town. Riffing off of composed rhythmic fragments, the duo seamlessly drifts into flowing complexities through their makeshift percussion kits. Also joining the evening are the interstellar giants Not the Wind, Not the Flag (Colin Fisher & Brandon Valdivia), as well as the drums + guitar duo Doug Tielli & Mike Gennaro, formerly of projects such as Wrist Error and Drumheller, reuniting with their blistering pace. Sounds beginning at 8:30pm, happening at the underpass at the North end of Bickford Park. Travel south down the steps from Bloor St and you won’t miss us. No doors in the outdoors, keep an eye out for the PWYC. Sunday, May 24th 8pm Bickford Park PWYC Poster by Doug Tielli
