I’m not going to lie… lately I’ve been hesitant to post videos of myself. My body is changing and it’s changing fast. And if I’m being honest, I’ve always put a lot of pressure on myself. But in this industry, the pressure around the physical is just… loud. But what’s bigger than that… is what people don’t see. The feeling of strength. The feeling of being able to do it. The feeling of having a really shitty day or week… and still showing up. This has always been my therapy day in and day out. I wouldn’t be the person I am today without this method. It’s saved me in more ways than I can even explain. And today in class, I had a moment… I was just really happy that my body is still allowing me to do this to teach, to move, and sweat to show up in a way that still feels SO good. This season looks different… but it still feels right. And I’m so grateful I can still show up for me and for this community. Somewhere along the way, the fitness industry convinced people that machines were the “next level.” (Example:reformers) But the truth is… mat was never the easy version. In many ways, it’s actually harder. On machines like the Reformer, springs provide assistance and resistance. The carriage moves on rails. Straps guide your limbs. Shoulder blocks help stabilize your body. All of these things create support and feedback that help control the movement. On the mat, none of that exists. No springs. No straps. No carriage. No external support. Just you, your body, and gravity. Every inch of the movement has to come from your own strength and control. Your deep core stabilizers, pelvic floor, obliques, and spinal muscles have to do all the work to keep your pelvis stable, your ribs connected, and your spine aligned. If your core disengages for even a moment, you feel it immediately. There’s nowhere to hide. Exercises like roll-ups, teasers, leg lowers, and double-leg stretch become incredibly demanding because you’re controlling your entire body weight against gravity without assistance. Machines can sometimes guide the movement. The mat exposes the movement. The equipment was originally meant to support and teach the control that mat work demands. But somewhere along the way, the industry flipped that narrative. So if you’ve ever taken a true mat class and thought, why is this so hard? — that’s exactly the point.
