Guys!!! I’ve officially made it around the DariĆ©n gap!!! I’ve arrived in Capurgana, Colombia where I will sell the cayuco. First footsteps in South America feel so special after arriving in a dugout canoe after 3 weeks of crazy hard adventure, the feeling simply can’t be described. I’m relived to have made it safely, but the overwhelming feeling is of pride. I conceived the idea for this trip while travelling by motorcycle through Central America in March this year. It was a very adventurous period of my life sleeping in a tent and living on the road, so the ā€˜step up’ to this canoe adventure seemed very palatable. 4 months later and I’ve been hit by a truck and flown home to Canada for summer. The physical aspect of the canoe adventure seemed a lot more daunting with a sprained wrist and hyperextended elbow that took time to heal. The most difficult thing to overcome though was my mind. While I would never have admitted this to anyone, I seriously considered giving up on this Darien gap adventure 3 times. Once in Canada and twice after landing in Panama. While friends were (quite rightly) expressing their concerns about my trip, little things like buying a life jacket would paralyse me with fear. Standing in Decathlon for 25 minutes staring at a piece of equipment I was about to buy to better increase my chance of survival if something went wrong at sea ~ wtf am I doing?! After discovering the daunting realty of long distance travel in the very heavy and unstable cayuco, a series of events leading up to leaving, like a high fever and my phone breaking, also nearly made me throw in the towel. To top things off the night before I left, at the height of my anxiety, I was visited by a Papalota Negra, a rare black moth commonly thought to signify death. The beautiful moth was the size of my fist and perched on the ceiling above my bed while I tried to sleep, fantastic. At the end of the day I’m not so much proud of the photos or the stories or the drone shots. I’m proud of fighting these moments. I’m proud that i am someone that keeps going! Ultimately, if you want to do something, you just have to keep going. šŸ’ŖšŸ¼ #canoecamping #dariengap #adventureculture

Sat on the 🚽 a few years ago when I had a realisation: I had developed the habit of scrolling whilst sat in the toilet and decided to turn it into something more productive. Each time I would go to the toilet, I would open maps instead. Sometimes it opens where I was last looking, sometimes where I am now, sometimes somewhere totally new. It didn’t matter where or for how long, but I would look for trails, interesting roads, viewpoints and learn to read contours at a glance. What resulted was thousands of pins across North and South America, and even some across Europe, the Middle East and Australia. While I’ve gotten good at being able to tell when a place is exciting from the contours, nothing beats the @onxoffroad 3D mapping feature for planning where to camp, where to stop and take in the view and where to throw up the drone. If you’d also like to try OnX Offroad, from the toilet or otherwise, you can use my code: ā€˜Bemorecharles’ at checkout, or visit the OnX link in my bio for 20% off! #onxambassador #Adv #OverlandLife #DualSport #OffRoadAdventure

I get a lot of messages online about the places I share in BC. Most people are asking me to share locations. Some people are angry I’ve shared locations. Adventure content will always be a fine line to walk between inspiring people to go outside and the sharing the beautiful places out there, and protecting them! That’s why I always use fake names, make an effort to distort my content visually, and make locations very difficult to determine to all but those that already know what they are. Please don’t ask me to share locations on here, I’d love it if you were inspired to go and find some of your own, though! #ExploreBC #OverlandBC #4x4Adventure #BritishColumbiaLife #AdventureCulture
