I saw this post on IG about “unlearning colonial mentality” but what does that look like in real life? because for me I love fashion and style I wear wigs, shop foreign brands and let’s be honest sometime western options are better and pretending it isn’t doesn’t make this conversation more authentic.
So yeah we are allowed to acknowledge excellence without it being read as brainwashing or “colonial mentality” Not everything needs to be moralized sometimes the craftsmanship and finishing and overall experience is just better…..Sizing, packaging, finishing, price point I could go on it’s a long list there is a whole ecosystem built around making you feel CONSIDERED as a costumer and that matters to me.
So romanticizing everything pre-colonial or rejecting western influences completely will not move us forward infact it feels just as unserious as the mentality we are trying to fight here
At the same time there is an active “foreign is better mentality” when as a collective we assume, you know imported means premium or luxury before we even see the item when the bare minimum is more desirable because it came with an accent and don’t even get me started on how we overlook talent untill someone abroad validates it first again I could go onnnn that is where the real issue is.
But if we are being adults for a moment we can admit that Africa is still building across many sectors healthcare, architecture, tech, fashion manufacturing, logistics and that’s not even an insult it’s just what it’s is…Other parts of the world have had longer periods of industrial growth more funding stronger systems more research etcetera
So no completely rejecting western influence or pretending we can simply delete it over night is fantasy level thinking the healthier position is discernment to ask yourself “do I like this because it’s genuinely good or because I’ve been conditioned to think foreign equals better?” And If after introspection you still prefer foreign brands and still love your wigs and international aesthetics fabulous!( because I do) but at least you know “why” and you can make the necessary adjustment if need be.

Jeremie’s: Ms B I want you to do something for me
Me: (stressed out of my mind but I say )okay just tell me what do. I love filming with @whoisjeremie I never really know what we are doing but I trust it and I’m never disappointed.
And one day I learned how to be myself and it has been profoundly liberating. In a tragic way almost because it’s taken a lifetime to realize that I never needed to construct an identity from fragments I am not a patchwork of my experiences or influences ….I am not a composite of the roles I’ve played a boss a wife or anyone’s expectation of me. I am not anyone’s anything I am first and foremost simply myself. Whole. Unapologetic. Free.
