Today, we stand together to celebrate diversity and reaffirm a simple truth: everyone deserves to live freely, equally and with dignity.
Observed worldwide on 17 May, this year’s theme, “At the heart of democracy,” reminds us that equality, inclusion and human rights are essential to strong and thriving societies.
🇧🇪 Belgium has long been at the forefront of LGBTQ+ rights. From becoming one of the first countries in the world to legalise same‑sex marriage in 2003, to continuously strengthening anti‑discrimination protections and supporting equality at home and abroad.
On this day, and every day, we stand with LGBTQ+ communities in Belgium, the UK and around the world to challenge prejudice, celebrate diversity and build a future where everyone is free and equal.
💬 Join us today, and every day in spreading awareness and solidarity.

A quieter ocean starts with collective action. 🌊
Last night, during the IMO Marine Environment Protection Committee, we had the pleasure of hosting a reception at the Ambassador’s Residence in support of the High Ambition Coalition for a Quiet Ocean.
The aim was twofold:
🔹 to inform countries about the Coalition’s work to reduce underwater noise pollution, and
🔹 to encourage those not yet members to engage and join this growing initiative.
We were honoured to welcome ambassadors and senior representatives from around 15 countries.
Together with our co‑hosts Panamá 🇵🇦 and the Canadian High Commission 🇨🇦, and thanks to the dedication of our NGO partners, we highlighted why underwater noise is not just a nuisance, but a real threat to marine biodiversity.
With 38 countries already engaged, the conversation now turns to how we grow this momentum towards quieter seas and healthier oceans for future generations.

Last Thursday, Colonel Van Belle and our Consul‑General travelled to Dover to attend the commemoration of the Zeebrugge Raid (23 April 1918).
On this day over a century ago, British forces launched a daring operation against the German‑occupied port of Zeebrugge, aiming to disrupt U‑boat operations threatening Allied shipping during the First World War.
Though costly, the raid became a powerful symbol of courage, sacrifice and Allied cooperation.
We were honoured to remember those who took part and to reflect on this shared chapter of Belgian–British history. 🇧🇪🇬🇧

Yesterday our Ambassador had the pleasure of attending a viewing of the Michaelina Wautier exhibition at the Royal Academy of Arts 🎨
Michaelina Wautier (1604–1689), a pioneering artist active in 17th‑century Brussels, worked across an unusually wide range of genres including still life, portraiture and large‑scale history paintings traditionally reserved for men. Her work was celebrated in her lifetime but nearly disappeared from art history until a recent scholarship brought her brilliance back into focus 🎨📜
Running from 27 March to 21 June 2026, this exhibition repositions Wautier as one of Europe’s most important artists, featuring masterpieces such as The Triumph of Bacchus and works shown in partnership with the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna 🖼️✨.
