Grateful to be here! 0.2mm ink pen on an A2 piece of 250gsm paper. The process of making these bigger drawings is often accompanied by a series of thoughts which compliment or explain the art in some mysterious way. I’ll usually hang on to these snippets of language and type them out as the caption for these posts. I feel like ideas are a kind of spirit that’s desperate to exist in the physical realm and only take form once they’ve been funnelled through a persons unique brain valve. I doodle a lot and enjoy messing around with words so these are the means through which I solidify this energy. This could have just as well been a song, for example, had I spent the last eight years strumming a guitar and singing instead of scribbling in a sketchbook. Anyway, this is the word version of this drawing. Consider it a word doodle. I don’t think it’s particularly interesting but I do want to get it out of my head, and I’m rebelling against short attention spans. My behaviour is productively impulsive. I’ll sit in my room for hours, spiralling within a mental vortex, jumping from one habit driven activity to another. I don’t ever quite seem able to settle on one specific activity. I dwell within a maelstrom of possibility. Should I spend this moment drawing a line? Or am I better off placing a word over there? Do I need some coffee? Music? Is it a stretching or hunching sort of day? What is my biggest priority.. Making money or making something honest and pure? I could immerse myself within an infinite range of artistic endeavours but this mobile phone is awfully seductive. Perhaps I just need to get outside and take some photos or play with my skateboard. It helps to be in the world filling up the reservoir of inspiration. Basically, I just never know what the right objective is. What you end up with is a young dropout, me, sitting there doing nothing and everything simultaneously, decorating lazy days with unpredictable bursts of frantic creative energy. Occasionally it all comes together and I have a weird picture to look at. I’m grateful to be hooked on doodling. It gives me purpose in times when I’d otherwise feel pretty useless.

Selling a small run of these screen-printed T shirts at the link in my bio. The graphics are ‘planters dub’ and ‘no more war’. Cause war is ugly and love is double lovely! Dub it! Just a small disclaimer that I didn’t check the t shirt shape before ordering and it’s kinda odd and long. Still alright though, especially for the lanky gangsters. Thanks @care_ron for repping the shirts in these photographs. Yeow!

Album art and sleeve design for the most shredding band currently doing it in Aotearoa. ☠️☠️☠️ I massively appreciate these guys and their sound so it’s a huge honour to have been trusted with the task of visually representing their years of hard work and dedication. I’m also a complete vinyl fanatic so seeing my doodles in this format is super rewarding. The music sounds unreal on wax too. Grab a copy at the @hoickbandnz bandcamp while you still can. Much love and respect to all involved with this dope project. Long live authentic roots rock n roll. Do yourself a big favour and see these guys live if you ever get the chance. Yeoooowww

I’ve been hooked on drawing for ages now. I got my first sketchbook at the age of 18 based on a naive intuition that it was some sort of life’s calling and have never gone without one since. These books have been sitting on a shelf gathering dust for years. Yesterday arvo, I pulled some out to reminisce on my past. I think I like these drawings more now than I ever did. Enough time has passed for me to forget the sense of inevitable dissatisfaction that always comes with trying to capture the imagination (impossible task). I see a freedom in these pages that is sometimes absent now that I’ve been fortunate to receive praise from friends and family for this skill that I’ve put so much time into refining. The fear of people not liking my stuff sadly creeps in more now than it did back then. Looking back is a reminder to work with presence, looseness, and an uninhibited intuitive purity of expression. This habit changed my life for the better. It can continue to do so if I allow it. I’m glad to have these memories of my younger mind, and to be continuing to capture my current one on a pretty much daily basis. All of these completed some time between about 2017 and 2021.

A couple months ago I had the great pleasure of painting up these boards shaped by the maestro @intox69 Always a good buzz hanging around the factory, blasting tunes and sharing yarns with the old boys. I pretty much had full creative freedom on these which is absolutely ideal. Love to just let the imagination flow through. Always keen to do art on any available surface, so if you’re in need of some cosmic vomit.. hit me up. Thanks again for having me Spoony. Legend!!

This year, I’ll be displaying some stuff for Raglan Arts Weekend, running October 25th to 27th. It’ll be pretty interesting to see how the general public responds to my outlandish weirdo nonsense doodles. I’m psyched haha The opening is on Friday the 24th from 6pm onwards. There’ll be tunes, good vibes and hopefully a book release if everything is printed in time. This is the part of it that’s most exciting to me, a chance to get buzzed with friends and whanau and share some unseen work. Thank you so much to the crew @raglantattoo for inviting me into their space after the last option fell through. Lifesavers!! Thanks also to @raglanartsweekend for setting up the weekend and doing some incredible promotion. Chur to the maximum. #art #graphicdesign #posterart #illustration #drawing
