Great to take some of the @westernbulldogs boys through an extended breathwork flow @pandosociety yesterday 🐶 This was about more than just “slowing down.” Designed specifically for AFL athletes - this flow helps release stress and tension, regulate the nervous system, build CO₂ tolerance and HRV to support faster recovery, sustained performance, and sharper focus and decision-making under pressure. The breath is the bridge between the external demands of the game and the internal world that drives performance. As Jon Kabat-Zinn said, “you can’t stop the waves, but you can learn to surf”…. Awesome morning taking some of the @essendonfc boys through a blended up and down regulating breath flow @pandosociety designed specifically for AFL athletes 💣🏉 The flow helps to release any surface anxiety, stress and tension and expand their window of tolerance for what life and footy inevitably throw at them, supporting faster recovery, sustained performance, and the ability to stay calm, clear, and composed within the chaotic nature of AFL. This leads to improved present moment awareness, increased focus and better decision making under pressure! A big thank you to AFL.com.au, and in particular @joshgabelich , for the beautiful write-up and for valuing the role this work can play in supporting AFL athletes. In the midst of mental health challenges across the AFL, it’s so important that players know there are resources, support, and tools available beyond the four walls of their club. Mental health exists on a complex spectrum, and different tools resonate with different people - whether that’s traditional psychology, the coaching work I do around breathwork, mindset, meditation and visualisation, or another path entirely. Healing, growth, and personal development are never resigned to just one modality. At the heart of it all, I believe what matters most is that individuals feel seen, understood, supported, and safe enough to be their most authentic and purposeful self. To express themselves and play the game with freedom. And to know that regardless of pressure, performance, or expectation, their self-worth or ‘enoughness’ is never defined by results.
