@behind_____you taps in
@asap.rako @_teether and
@datuizm for a cacophonic display of Australian underground talent in this week’s feature video, ‘The Well’.
It’s a furious, high energy experiment for Sydney-based, hip-hop/punk three piece Behind You, with the addition of Rako’s systolic flow, Teether’s token low drawl and BAYANG’s lad-rap cadence culminating in a sonic fever dream, which is reflected in the accompanying self-directed music video. Similarly to the way Professor Utonium created the Powerpuff Girls with a little help from Chemical X, Behind You links together the diverse styles of each of their collaborating artists with the help of slightly unhinged jump cuts, a little AI smarts and the textural softness of a Hi-8 camera.
Speaking on the production of the clip, Behind You frontman
@thanks_welsh (FKA Frank Fisher) explains that the video for ‘The Well’ is the group’s most ambitious clip to date. “We direct everything ourselves and get quite precious about our aesthetic and the concept of our videos. The song itself is such a blend of energies and moods, we wanted the visuals to reflect that shifting spirit. We found the world of a ‘fever dream’ to fit that perfectly - starting with our hero waking up from a nightmare, only to find that said nightmare had invaded his reality… The aesthetic of the Hi-8 camera was essential to the texture we wanted - something nostalgic and familiar that would be extra jarring capturing the cracked content of the story.”
With a special mention to costume designer
@palmtreesfall and DOP
@ben.lindberg (plus an entire team of local creative brains) for tying together the production’s loose ends, there’s no telling what’s next for Behind You and their collaborators Rako, Teether and BAYANG (tha Bushranger). If you were waiting for an all-in display of the fierceness of the Aussie underground scene, this is it. 👊🔥
