CONTENT ADVISORY: This film contains references to mental illness, sexual abuse, suicide and violence.
An intimate portrait of acclaimed Samoan writer Sia Figiel eight years in the making when tragedy struck. The film offers an in-depth and thought-provoking look at Sia’s tumultuous journey leading to that traumatic moment, illuminating the complexities of inconsistently treated mental illness and the devastating toll it can exact on individuals, families and entire communities.
Winner, Best Made in Hawai‘i Feature, Hawai‘i International Film Festival, 2025

BEFORE THE MOON FALLS was never about a single event or headline.
It was built over years, in conversation, in listening and in trying to understand a person. In this interview with Hawai‘i Public Radio, the director/producer Kimberlee Bassford talks about how, for us, what remains is not an attempt to resolve contradictions but to sit with them and how we continue to hold this story with care. Always.

While we catch our breath between festivals, we keep coming back to this, how do you tell a story like this with care?
BEFORE THE MOON FALLS was never just about showing, but about holding space. 🌙

March is Social Work Month. 💙
Social workers are often the ones showing up in the hardest, most complex moments, supporting individuals, families, and communities through challenges that don’t have easy answers. The work they do every day is essential, even when it goes unseen.
The themes in BEFORE THE MOON FALLS are closely connected to this kind of care. To listen, to support, and to stay present when things are difficult.
We are grateful for all those doing this work.

We’re honored to share that BEFORE THE MOON FALLS received the Best Feature Award at the DOCUTAH International Film Festival.
A huge thank you to the DOCUTAH team, and the wonderful audiences in St. George for welcoming the film so warmly. Festivals like this remind us why these stories matter and how meaningful it is to share them together in a room.
The festival’s trophy is designed as a bison horn made of film, a beautiful nod to both the American West and the art of cinema.
Swipe through to see a few moments from the festival:
- The first photo is from the award night. From left to right: director Laura Paglin (THIS IS PIKE COUNTY, which received the Enlightenment Award), director Kimberlee Bassford (BEFORE THE MOON FALLS, which won Best Feature), and director Robert Rooy (LOVING JOHN, which won the Audience Favorite Feature Award).
