From the road. April 2026.
Three car selfies to start in Seattle.
Will driving his first stretch — the twisty mountain road from Portland down to Manzanita through Hebo, Oregon. He did great. I only told him to slow down twice.
Highway outside Salem.
Gus behind the wheel, Will in the passenger seat with his phone up, taking a photo. Then: Dad, look — it's Mount Shasta. Take a photo! It's so luminous! For years I drove that same stretch and made the same demand in reverse — put down your devices, look at the mountain, it's right there. Now Gus is the one telling me to look at the beauty all around us. I looked. I took the photo.
Getting ready for bed at the Elm House Inn in Napa. The car smells like animal crackers.
ZoomZ getting a much needed bath after twenty-plus hours on dusty roads and a few detours, and more animal crackers. Santa Barbara
All clean. Ready for its next exciting chapter.

Chalk
Life is Like a Chalkboard
When you have a piece of chalk
You feel proud of the tall white stick.
But as it gets smaller
The chalk feels more precious
Until there is nothing left.
But there might be another on the ledge.

Thank you, Jodie for sending.
I started reading @emmatourtelot book today: No One You Know.
I have a long my-next-book reading lineup. It’s like when a flight controller stacks all those big airplanes for landing. I feel that same way about my books.
No matter if you give me a book for Christmas or for my birthday, it’s probably not the next thing I read. Sorry. I’ve got ten items in my next-book stack circling over LaGuardia.
Thank you, Emma, for sending me your book. You’re getting special treatment—jumping ahead of Uncool by Cameron Crowe—because I know it’s going to be great.
Coast (Corolla NC) to coast (Tofino BC). 25 years married: 4 dogs, 2 magnificent boys, a few houses, a bunch of countries, jobs/no jobs, incredible friends. It's a miracle & we are so lucky ❤️
Thank you to everyone who came out to the show and sipped on a Cosmo (or a SKIPPER, whichever you prefer). And yes, I’ll be getting my own drink too! A big thanks to Naomi @naomithefool for inviting me to your show. If you missed the improvised Sex and the City, be sure to follow Second City on Instagram for more info!

From the pilot episode of Sex and the City. My first scene with SJP went GREAT despite my lack of real world experience in both acting and sex. Afterwards the Prop Guy said: “Don’t get too comfortable with that phone,” after I returned it to my pocket. First time with a cell phone — a lot of firsts!!! If you live in the tristate area please check out: YES AND THE CITY. Details to follow.
