Toss Maniac (1980), Violation, and Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Next Generation into a blender, and you get Pierre Tsigaridisâ ferociously biting and bloody Frankie, Maniac Woman. Co-written with Dina Silva, who stars as the titular character, the film burns Hollywoodâs obsession with body image (specifically, the grossly dated skinny white woman standard) to the goddamn ground.
In the ash, Tsigaridis and Silva rebuild a mausoleum around themes of fatness, misogyny, and female rage. Frankie, Maniac Woman, playing this yearâs Panic Fest, doesnât just clobber you over the head; it takes a rusted machete and evicerates the system, letting all the guts spill out onto the floor.

Some of the best horror being made these days happens on the indie circuit. Cassie Keetâs Scream Therapy snuck under the radar, but Iâve been screaming about it ever since its release. Billed as a horror/comedy, the satanic film leans heavily into comedy with decorative horror elements. The physical and verbal gags mostly work, and even when they donât, theyâre so silly that they still elicit a chuckle or two.
As far as indies go, Scream Therapy fits snugly somewhere between Slay and Summoning Sylvia, for its reliance on actor chemistry and commitment to the work. Built upon a tight script, also penned by Keet, thereâs just enough scatterbrained horror to keep you glued to your seat.

I had a great convo with writer/director Ronald Short about his short film TASTY BONES, love of muppets, folklore about whistling in the woods at night, and cooking up a playfully monstrous creation!

THE PICTURE SHOW
REDUX REDUX & HUNTER HUNTER
âRevenge is a dish best served cold,â French author Pierre Choderlos de Laclos coined in his 1782 novel, Les Liaisons Dangereuses (or Dangerous Liaisons). Many literary critics and historians believe this to be the very first use of the phrase. Centuries later, it still rings hot in the ears of filmmakers and other artists.
Matthew McManus and Kevin McManus sculpt a remarkably emotional and poignant story about grief and revenge in Redux Redux, driving the notion of calculated vengeance into your skull. Shawn Lindenâs similarly themed Hunter Hunter operates in the same provocative plane, raising themes of retribution, a womanâs bloodthirst for justice, and the role of morality.

In a past life, I worked the Speedway attraction at Disney World. I was 22, right out of college, and needing a holiday following a four-year acting intensive at West Virginia University. I didnât know what I wanted out of life, but I knew I needed to be there. I grew up in the era of Britney Spearsâ pop breakout and the battle of the bands between Backstreet Boys and NSYNC (Team BB over here!). To the surprise of literally no one, I gravitated toward Miley Cyrusâ double life as Hannah Montana. Well, I didnât actually watch the show, but I was obsessed with the music.
After Cyrusâ âSee You Againâ became a gay-club smash, I discovered how good the music from Hannah Montana was during my seven months at Disney. âThe Best of Both Worlds,â from that first album, was and is pure pop magic. Thereâs something so innocent yet so incredibly mature about lyrics. Sure, sheâs singing about living a life as both Miley and Hannah, but dig a little deeper, and you can apply its sentiments to adulthood, too. As humans, we are inherently complicated beings. Society tells us, particularly millennials, that as you âgrow up,â you must pack away your childhood, playtime, and anything fun in some attic somewhere and inhabit the boring, mundane, and totally uninspired adult world.

I initially launched 100 Reviews in 100 Days as a fundraiser to keep from being homeless, but some people in the horror âcommunityâ thought that was dumb.
I recalibrated, and now, itâs NOT a fundraiser. I want to boost YOUR work. If youâre a horror filmmaker, Iâd love to watch your film and review it.
