A surge of compassion swept through Bedessee Imports in Scarborough this week as community leaders, city officials and volunteers gathered to launch a major relief drive for Jamaica’s recovery from Hurricane Melissa.
The call to action came from a cross-section of Toronto’s leadership. “We’ve all seen the images, homes washed away, families displaced, roads destroyed,” said Mayor Olivia Chow, addressing the packed warehouse space turned relief hub.
“Toronto has one of the largest Jamaican communities in the world. Now it’s our turn to give Jamaica the same love and strength that community has always given to our city, she noted.”
The gathering at Bedessee Imports, a well-known Caribbean business and cultural landmark, marked the beginning of a city-wide mobilization.
The City of Toronto, working with the Jamaican Canadian Association (JCA), other community organizations and the Toronto Fire Service, will collect donations of non-perishable food, bottled water, hygiene products, and essential supplies at fire stations across the city.
In a powerful gesture of solidarity, Bedessee Imports announced that it will donate 21 tons of food and essential goods to support the relief effort.
Company president Rayman Bedessee said the decision came from a sense of duty to the people of Jamaica and the Caribbean at large.
“When we saw the devastation, we knew we had to act immediately,” Bedessee said. “Jamaica has always been close to our hearts and to our customers. Donating 21 tons of products is our way of saying to the people of Jamaica, you are not alone. Toronto stands with you.”
“Toronto is a city built on compassion and community,” Mayor Chow added. “Every dollar, every can of food, every gesture counts. Jamaica needs a big hug from the world and Toronto is leading the way.”

From food staples to household essentials, every item represents more than just aid — it represents solidarity, hope, and the unbreakable bond between our communities.
In moments like these, it’s not about one brand or one city.
It’s about all of us.
It’s about choosing compassion, showing up, and making sure no one faces hardship alone.
Let’s continue to lift each other up, support recovery efforts, and remind the world what real unity looks like. 🌍❤️

Proud moment as Sous Chef for Mama Lemonade🍋
Teaching our Star Gyals ages 8–18 how to make Guyanese chow mein and learning way more than just cooking.
This workshop was about:
✨ confidence
✨ teamwork
✨ basic life skills
✨ culture in the kitchen
I also had the opportunity to advocate for young women, sharing a personal message around safety, awareness and trusting your instincts, conversations that matter just as much as what’s on the stove.
Big thank you to all the sponsors, mentors and INCA volunteers who showed up with their time, care, and commitment. ❤️💛💚 @bombaylemonade@compressortechnologyinc@bedessee@shereensbakery@psiseafoods@rily.kitchen
