Anyone who loved The Secret Garden as a child will adore this episode! It's a fireside conversation with Martha and Emma, the dynamic women breathing new life into @prideauxwalledgarden to make it abundant and beautiful again after 30 years of disrepair. Taking their lead from their shared passion for soil health, bringing nature back into the garden and reconnecting with old ways of growing and consuming food and flowers Martha and Emma have created a truly magical place in the garden. It's been one of my favourite places to visit since they opened three years ago, but hearing them tell their story and seeing their collaboration in action was such a joy it made me love it all the more. It’s time to supercharge your soil⚡ Heard of microbial brews? They’re like a sourdough starter for your soil. And the best part? They’re easy to make, using materials you already have in your allotment, garden or local area. Got comfrey or nettles growing in your garden? Perfect! 🌱 Live by the coast? Seaweed and oyster shells are your secret weapons! 🪸 🦪 There are loads of options – experiment with what you have and aim for as much diversity as possible. Add a small splash to your watering can for a big impact, and combine microbial brews with composting, for optimum soil health. Ready to brew? Watch the short film and learn how to make your own microbial brews for your compost with @beddardo from @prideauxwalledgarden 📽️ Prideaux was part of a compost trial with @innovative_farmers for Farm Net Zero, which we’re proud to support with other partners. Can composting kill weeds, prevent disease and save carbon? This video digs into the Farm Net Zero compost field lab. It's a farmer-led project aimed at perfecting composting in a commercial setting, so that growers can rely less on bought in inputs and improve their soil at the same time. During this farmer-led research, the growers learned how to get their composting right, which has provided a range of benefits, such as less waste material and more of a closed-loop ecosystem, reduced weed burden, plus improved soil biology and structure. After five years of trials, the project has shared its findings on: 🌱 The impacts of turning compost according to temperature, rather than a timed schedule 🌱 Adding biochar, bokashi, and bespoke microbial concoctions to compost 🌱 The longevity of weed seeds and pathogens in compost The field lab may have been based in Cornwall, but its results stretch far beyond the county, offering valuable insights to others across the UK and even worldwide. 🌍 Want to find out more? See the link in bio for info on the compost field lab, details about Farm Net Zero, plus a link to the full field lab film 🔗 #Compost #Composting #CompostBenefits

I’m excited (and a bit nervous 🫣) to say that back in early June we welcomed @plantsforwellbeing and the @gardenersworldtv team into the garden to talk about the restoration of @prideauxwalledgarden and everything that we’ve been doing for soil health with the brilliant Hannah Jones from @farmcarbontoolkit It’ll be shown this Friday at 9pm on BBC Two, and repeated again on Saturday at 11.05 You’ll find me watching from being the sofa 👀
