We will be opening up our next committee meeting on Tuesday 12th May to all branch members. Apologies for the late notice. We have recently received messages from members that reflect a certain level of concern among crew about the general state of the industry at the moment. We wanted to give you the opportunity to attend a BECTU meeting where we can come together as a community and also talk about the work the committee has been focusing on. There will be opportunities to ask questions. We’d love to see you there. Zoom link will be sent out via email.

The Bectu Art Department committee are surveying all members of the Art Department (Art, Set Decoration, Graphics & Drapes) union or not, for the new 2026 Art Department Rate Card. We are aware that the industry is quiet, and a lot of us may be out of work right now, but we are interested in hearing from you with projects worked in both 2025 and 2026, so do not hesitate to tell us about any project you have undertaken in the past year and/or gearing up to start soon. With the possibility of an Art Department Rate Card to be ratified by PACT for the first time on the horizon, and with PACT collecting their own data on rates for comparison, this survey could be the most consequential in recent years. The quality of our survey data will be key to a favourable outcome to the ratification negotiations, which would have ramifications for years to come; so thank you for taking the time to complete this survey. Responses will be completely confidential. Please share amongst your colleagues as the more responses we have, the stronger our ability to make a reliable rate card. Both Bectu Members and Non-Members can fill in the survey. Lastly, the Allowances Survey is still live, so please complete this one too if not already done so. A new allowance guidance document will be released alongside our ratecard thanks to the data collected in our surveys. SURVEY LINKS in our bio !

‘A worker is considered to have ‘broken turnaround’ when they are required by their employer to return to work within less than 11 consecutive hours in each 24-hour period. This is in breach of workplace rights set out in Regulation 10 of The Working Time Regulations 1998. Nearly half (40%) of those surveyed said they were frequently asked to “break turnaround,” and a further 34% reported that they were sometimes asked to ‘break turnaround.’ Just 4% said they had not been asked to break turnaround on any of their last three jobs. The union strongly believes that crew should have a proper 11-hour break in every 24 hours or compensatory rest to help establish clear boundaries between work and personal life and mitigate health and safety risks both on and offsite, such as driving to and from set.’ - @bectuunion 🗳 Bectu has a Broken Turnaround reporting form you can use to report whenever you are asked to break turnaround. Earlier this year we surveyed more than 1000 Art Department, Set Decoration, Graphics and Drapes Crew. We used the information that we received from this survey to help us create the 2024 rate card which has now been issued. Each year we apply a percentage increase to account for inflation. This year, we also applied a percentage increase inline with the PACT/BECTU Construction Agreement. We then made adjustments within the department as a whole and used the data we had collected in the survey to do this. Don’t be put off if you receive any pushback when trying to negotiate to these rates, this is common when a new rate card is produced. You might want to mention that the Art Department work closely with Construction who managed to negotiate a 4.95% increase in their rate this year, so it is reasonable for Art Department to negotiate a similar increase. We know that it is frustrating that our rate card is not ratified by PACT. Both PACT and BECTU want to discuss ratification but talks are currently on hold due to the ongoing CMA investigation into rate fixing by production companies. In an ideal world, we would release the rate card in April each year, to coincide with the Construction Rate Card. This year, however, as in past years we really struggled to find enough Art Department crew members willing to give some time to help with the calculation, charting and consultation necessary to create the Rate Card. If you have been frustrated with this delay, we would really appreciate your help putting together the next rate card so we can get it out to members in a timely manner, send us an email at [email protected] if you’re able to assist! #bectuartdepartment #bectu #bectuunion #artdepartment @bectuunion
