Becker Brakel commemorates Frank Gehry A visionary of architecture Frank Gehry, one of the most influential architects of our time, passed away on December 5, 2025, at the age of 96 in Santa Monica. Few shaped the architecture of the late 20th and early 21st century as profoundly as he did. His deconstructivist, sculptural buildings transformed cityscapes worldwide – including the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, the Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles, the Neuer Zollhof in Düsseldorf, the Fondation Louis Vuitton in Paris, and the Marta Museum in Herford. He received numerous international awards for his work. Yet Gehry did not seek innovation only in large-scale architecture. He also dedicated himself to the question of how design and art could be translated into everyday life. A central aim was to create furniture that could be produced in series while still maintaining high aesthetic ambitions – a bridge between industry and art. A special connection to Brakel An extraordinary chapter of this pursuit leads directly to Fritz Becker GmbH & Co. KG. In the early 1990s, Frank Gehry personally visited the company in Brakel to explore the possibilities of molded plywood. This meeting sparked an intensive development phase that ultimately resulted in the iconic Hat Trick chair series. The models were made from nine layers of maple veneer and later produced for Knoll International in the United States. Two Becker employees played a key role in this collaboration: Development Manager Joachim Schelper, who created the prototypes using specially designed press tools, and long-time Sales Director Günter Schwarz. In 1992, he spent several days in Santa Monica, working with three technicians from Knoll in Gehry’s dedicated development workshop to finalize the seating-ready, producible models. Proud of a shared milestone Becker Brakel looks back with pride on this collaboration, which led to one of the most renowned chair families in modern design history. BB'SHell - realised with SHRINX 4952 - we pursued the goal of staging our technical textile SHRINX in a homely context - with the highest level of design and technical sophistication. @beckerbrakel supported us with great openness - and granted us access to its impressive timber warehouse. It felt like Christmas. A classic wooden bowl was transformed into something completely new through skilled craftsmanship and radical thinking: the bowl was split down the middle, finely sanded - and became a stage for textile innovation. We then travelled to Fischer EKW. The company has decades of experience in the development of functional fittings for the home furniture sector. Dominik Kersting was immediately hooked - and created a load-bearing structure that is not only technically convincing, but also visually impressive: from behind, it is reminiscent of a spine and at the same time opens up a view into the inside of the shell - proof for all sceptics: no foam. Just structure. And SHRINX. The last missing piece of the puzzle came from our partner @oke_group , who was so impressed with the project that he quickly printed a plastic part for us. This enables a groove on the edge of the wooden shell - exactly where SHRINX is elegantly attached. Tabea Salomon, a long-standing expert in the field of textiles and upholstery, accompanied the project with great passion - a return to her roots for her, even if the classic upholstery was missing this time. This is how the B&B shell was created - a laboratory piece that is much more than a prototype. It is a statement in favour of new approaches, clever materials and strong partnerships. Due to this years' @beckerbrakel Design Forum No.12 at Interzum, Cologne, Copenhagen based designer @borisberlindesign revealed a revitalized classic constructive principle of molded plywood chairs. The result is a lightweight, perfectly stackable chair suitable for the contract market—such as meetings, auditoriums, and side seating—as well as for the residential market as a dining chair. Seat and back of this chair are made of our patented SHRINX 4903 ( /en/products/shrinx/4903 )

SHRINX+PLY by @borisberlindesign for @beckerbrakel Design Forum #12, 2025 - realised with SHRINX 4903 by Krall+Roth Crafted from only two easily separable materials, the chair is sustainable: the stackable frame is molded by Becker Brakel from locally sourced beech veneer, while the foamless upholstery on the seat and back is made from a self-supporting SHRINX textile from Krall+Roth. The chair is optimized for efficient industrial production. Its frame is designed to be molded using tools that can produce 30–40 components in a single press. Attaching the SHRINX textile is equally rational and efficient, and it can be easily removed and replaced. The result is a lightweight, perfectly stackable chair suitable for the contract market—such as meetings, auditoriums, and side seating—as well as for the residential market as a dining chair.
