Becazzes F.C.

Becazzes (n.) - (1) the Eurasian woodcock, famous for its erratic flight; (2) Greek slang for a shot so off-target it’s away with the birds; (3) - and most importantly - Athens’ newest women’s football team. @becazzes_fc started when a broad group of beginner players flocked to an Instagram story inviting women to play football. Since then, that group has spread its wings into a much larger collective - a space built by and for those rewriting the game to play, connect, and create community. The team came to Icarus with the idea of combining two design traditions: the look and feel of vintage football shirts and kentima, the traditional Greek embroidery art crafted by women. We made the kit in our ‘retro fabric’ to evoke the former while spotlighting the latter with a floral kentima pattern on the shoulder taping. When the shirts arrived, they headed right for Philopappos Hill with filmmaker, photographer and fellow Athenian grassroots player Lilena Marinou to capture their inaugural kit in the Greek sunshine.
