From recipe development to restaurant-style service, students in the Westview High School Culinary CTE program are gaining real-world experience that prepares them for careers in the culinary industry. Today, advanced culinary students hosted the second run of their student-led “Lucky Cat Cafe,” welcoming students, families and community members for a three-course dining experience. Guests enjoyed a pineapple lemongrass spritzer and spring roll salad. Entrée selections including birria ramen, orange chicken or pineapple shrimp fried rice, and a delicious gingersnap cookie sandwich for dessert. Throughout the year, students create, test, refine and serve their own recipes while building technical culinary skills, customer service experience, teamwork and professionalism. CTE is all about preparing students for future careers through authentic, hands-on learning experiences. Are you a culinary professional interested in partnering with our programs? Congratulations to Jeanne Woods, substitute teacher, who has been selected as a BSD Achiever for May. BSD Achievers is a program that recognizes the hard work and dedication of BSD staff members. Each month, three honorees are selected from nominations submitted by students, parents/guardians, staff and Beaverton community members. As stated in her nomination, “Jeanne Woods is pure love, joy, grace, optimism and positivity. She is a retired Bethany Elementary School teacher that I had the privilege to have on staff all of last year in a long-term sub position. She is one of our "go-to" subs that connects with every child in the school. To say she is BELOVED in the community is an understatement. Jeanne makes everyone around her feel important, valued and seen. Jeanne is a treasure that shines her light on everyone she meets. I am a better leader and person for knowing her. Her work with children, families, and colleagues is extraordinary.” Well deserved, Jeanne! Stay tuned for a video highlighting all three May BSD Achievers later this month! #BelongBelieveAchieve #BSDAchievers

The school board recognized Sato Elementary School fifth graders Mishika Chauhan and Madhesh Saravanan, and Hillsboro School District student Aariv Kumar, winners of both the state and regional rounds of the Presidential AI Challenge, Elementary Track 2. Their winning project, AI Safety for Kids, includes an app, a training video and policy proposals designed to make AI safer for children. Going beyond a technical solution, the team researched real-world risks children face when using AI, developed practical safeguards, and authored policy recommendations shared with state and federal policymakers. They will advance to the national competition in Washington, D.C., this June. Well done, Mishika, Madhesh and Aariv! #BelongBelieveAchieve

Congratulations to Roy Taporco, 5th grade teacher at Terra Linda Elementary School, who has been selected as a BSD Achiever for May. BSD Achievers is a program that recognizes the hard work and dedication of BSD staff members. Each month, three honorees are selected from nominations submitted by students, parents/guardians, staff and Beaverton community members. As stated in his nomination, “Mr. Taporco, my child’s 5th-grade teacher, has been a remarkable educator to me as a volunteer and a parent. During my time in the classroom, I’ve witnessed his unwavering dedication and commitment to his students. Despite my student’s anxiety, Mr. Taporco has taken the time out of his busy schedule to check in on him, ensuring his confidence and readiness for the next level of learning. One particularly memorable experience was during a field trip to a museum. Mr. Taporco went above and beyond by taking the time to listen to his ELD students and truly understand their experiences. As a parent who once faced the challenges of being an ELL student, I deeply appreciate this gesture. It demonstrates his genuine care, empathy and dedication to his students. Mr. Taporco’s exceptional efforts and commitment to his 5th-grade students truly deserve this award.” Well deserved, Roy!
