When your dear friend says they want Barbie cake for their birthday what do you do? You buy 3 boxes of Dolly Parton cake mix, 3 containers of Dolly Parton buttercream frosting, food dye, a barbie knock-off and for the win, Peeps! I called it the barbie peep show. Her life span was short, but her glory was great.

Matt @wordsofmasterhod was partially named after Matthew "Wink" O'Bannon. He could play some fierce guitar, he could keep a lit cigarette between his lips like no other, and he was as quick to argue as he was to have your back. We miss him.

The Hideout changes ownership today. It's hard to convey the importance of the Hideout, what it has meant to me and the bands I've played with. There was nothing like being on the Hideout stage in front of a packed house. The sound was right, the lights were right, the vibe was right. And, that's just the musical importance. There's the brilliant run of holiday Pantos that brought extraordinary magic to kids and adults alike. The opportunity to be Hanoi Janet on that stage is a career high point. I could continue on with its import in major life passages; the birthday parties and weddings of dear friends I attended, my own 60th party, my husband's retirement party, The shows of my son....Then there's the endless service to the larger Chicago community with the political talk shows and organizing. I mean what small bar gets Amy Klobacher and Dick Durbin to speak, or for that matter hauls a couple bus loads of bands for a big show in DC for Obama's first inauguration, then has busses ready at 5am to bring us to the swearing in? Tim, your shaggy dog band intros are nonpareil and Katie your solid presence and relentless energy is the stuff of legend. Together you created a space of gathering which fostered immense creativity, caring, acceptance, joy, commitment to justice and just an excellent place to pull up to the bar and have a beer or a wooden leg. Tim Tuten and Katie Tuten you were always front and center, but Mike and Jim Hinchsliff were part of the glue too. You are dear friends and I wish you nothing but the best and a little bit of rest in your new chapter. I love ya both and thank you from the bottom of my heart.

Today is the incomparable Doug McComb's birthday. I've been so lucky to have watched him over some 40 years strive for excellence in music and achieve it. It's truly inspiring. Really, this is true for anything he puts his mind to whether it's spreading butter on his toast, packing his suitcase, or his exacting sartorial style. Here we are as our much younger selves visiting Elvis' Graceland. Happy Birthday my friend!

This is one of my favorite photos of Matt and I. He was on the cusp of manhood at 18 and I was in the cusp of middle age at 45. He's gonna be 34 this month and we're navigating our approaching new cusp just fine.

1995 Freakwater did some touring in Europe with Townes Van Zandt. Indelible memories were made with the most etched being meeting Townes in the hotel breakfast bar each morning as the light of day was pushing in. I was up because Matt, my then toddler son, wanted a bottle. Townes was up I fear for the same reasons. They were beautiful moments of peacefulness filled with the joy of watching Matt and Townes playfully interact. Here is a hard copy relic of that time.
