This week is dominated by the theatrical release of Curry Barkerâs wish-fulfillment nightmare Obsession, but itâs one of six brand new horror movies that were released this week. Swipe left to see all the new horror that released this week.
The 1970s cult classic Magic starring Anthony Hopkins is getting a remake, with Sam Raimi DIRECTING the film for Lionsgate!
The ânewly imaginedâ take on the 1978 killer doll movie is written by Mark Swift & Damian Shannon (Freddy vs. Jason, Raimi's Send Help).
The original Magic starred Anthony Hopkins as Corky, a magician who reaches fame alongside his ventriloquistâs dummy, the obnoxious and wisecracking Fatsâwhom Corky cannot control.
Also starring Ann-Margret and Burgess Meredith, directed by Richard Attenborough, and written by William Goldman, based on his novel, the movie made waves even before its release with its terrifying TV ads, which declared, âMagic is funâweâre dead.â
Meagan Navarro wrote here on Bloody Disgusting back in 2023, âMagic is an underappreciated classic and one of horrorâs most unnerving love stories.â
Her 45th anniversary piece continued, âMagic wasnât the first time that a ventriloquist was terrorized by his own dummy, but its emphasis on the psychological, Hopkinsâ intense performance, and Attenborough opting for straightforward tension without a hint of camp elevated the film into something that holds up well. Moreover, Magic served as direct inspiration for Don Manciniâs original screenplay for Childâs Play."

While an official synopsis for the Blair Witch Project reboot is being kept under wraps, the first plot details have surfaced this week.
According to Deadline, âit will deal with a family that goes on a camping trip but goes missing one by one after they hear strange noises in the forest.â

âItâs not a âremake,'â Williams recently teased of the project. âYou just wait.â

The mythology of Passenger has been spilling out into the real world in recent daysâŠ
One of the coolest bits of marketing has seen ad cleverly placed at gas station pumps across the U.S., warning drivers to stay off the roads at night.
These ads direct drivers to dontdriveatnight.com, where they can listen to an official Spotify playlist and download the Haunted Highways of America guide.
The guide is featured in the movie itself, so this is your best chance at experiencing the world of Passenger before the film hits theaters on May 22nd via Paramount Pictures.

Whatever you do⊠donât drive at night.
Before he passed away in 2017, horror master George A. Romero had been developing one final zombie movie titled Twilight of the Dead, which has shown brief signs of life here and there over the years. The film is now finally shambling to the screen, with Kate Beckinsale on board to star.
Deadline reports that Beckinsale has replaced the previously announced Milla Jovovich in the film.
The project has been overhauled not only with a fresh star but also new directors.
The Paz Brothers (Jeruzalem, The Golem) are taking over the directorial reins from Brad Anderson, with stunts veteran Ho-Sung Pak (Bullet Train, Nightcrawler) set to helm the stunt and action sequences.
Twilight of the Dead is set on a decimated earth where the last vestiges of humanity are trapped between warring factions and an evolving undead threat.
No word on if the script is being updated as well, but the previous iteration is credited to Joe Knetter (Blind), Robert Lucas, and Paolo Zelati, based on George A. Romeroâs original story.

Mattelâs Monster High line gets an out-of-this-world look this Friday with the release of an official Killer Klowns from Outer Space doll based on beloved movie character Shorty.
Mattel previews, âThis Klown may look diabolical, but donât worry, Shorty probably wonât harvest you in cotton candy cocoons. Just donât ask whatâs in that swirly straw drink⊠trust us.â
The Skullector doll will be available Friday, May 15 at 9am PT on Amazon.com and MattelCreations.com.
Shorty will come with accessories including red boxing gloves and a mini cotton candy cocoon, and take note of her shoes, which are inspired by the filmâs balloon animals!

A belt made of popcorn kernels completes the look, making this doll a pitch perfect tribute to the style, energy and charm of a truly singular horror-comedy cult classic from the 1980s.

Obsession opens in theaters TONIGHT.
"Curry Barker wrings blood-curdling terror from a classic Monkeyâs Paw wish fulfillment scenario in Obsession," writes Bloody Disgusting's Head Critic Meagan Navarro. "A simple, well-trodden concept transforms into a shocking and unsettling descent into abject horror in Barkerâs capable hands, ensuring that his latest is destined to become horrorâs latest, well, obsession."
Meagan's review continues, "Inde Navarrette quickly becomes Obsessionâs not-so-secret weapon in this increasingly disturbing masterclass of wish-fulfillment horror. Curry Barker amplifies Nikkiâs erratic and increasingly violent behavior with chilling atmospherics and smart direction. Obsession is one freaky movie, especially in the night sequences that see Barker turn his romantic lead into a boogeyman."
"Obsession takes you on a wild ride," Meagan adds. "Itâs one insane journey paved with blood-soaked violence and no shortage of nightmare fuel. Barker puts his stamp on the wish-fulfillment subgenre with frightening flair."
