Today, as we commemorate Ekushey February, we also embrace the global celebration of International Mother Language Day. On this auspicious occasion, we not only honor the heroic sacrifices made by the students of The University of Dhaka but also stand in solidarity with the world in promoting linguistic and cultural diversity.
International Mother Language Day serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of preserving and promoting multilingualism as a cornerstone of global harmony. It calls upon us to cherish and nurture the languages that bind us to our roots, while also embracing the beautiful tapestry of languages that enrich our collective human experience.
As we reflect on the valorous acts of our language martyrs, let us pledge to uphold the principles of unity in diversity, to safeguard the rights of all languages, and to foster a world where every voice is heard and respected.
Today, we stand as guardians of our linguistic heritage, emboldened by the courage of those who came before us, and inspired by the promise of a more inclusive and interconnected world. đđī¸

In the crisp air of December 16, 1971, the streets of Bangladesh echoed with the spirit of freedom. As the sun rose, casting a golden glow on the nation, a valiant group of Bengali freedom fighters prepared for their final push against oppression.
In the heart of Dhaka, the capital city, the Mukti Bahini, strategically orchestrated their moves to liberate Bangladesh from the clutches of Pakistani forces. The air was charged with anticipation as the people held their breath, hoping for the dawn of a new era.
The night before, the Mukti Bahini had ingeniously planned a surprise attack, catching the Pakistani forces off guard. As the clock struck midnight, the sounds of gunfire and explosions reverberated through the land, signaling the beginning of the end for the oppressors.
In the early hours of December 16, the Mukti Bahini engaged in intense battles, pushing back the enemy forces block by block. The streets witnessed the bravery of Bangladeshi soldiers, who fought with unwavering determination for the freedom they had yearned for.
The people, huddled in their homes, listened anxiously to the distant echoes of war, their hearts pounding in unison with the footsteps of those fighting for their liberty. News spread like wildfire, reaching every corner of the nationâhope was on the horizon.
As the day unfolded, the Mukti Bahini and Indian forces achieved significant victories, reclaiming key territories. The resilience of the Bangladeshi spirit shone through as ordinary citizens joined the fight, offering support in any way they could. The air was filled not only with the acrid smell of gunpowder but also with the sweet scent of victory.
By the afternoon, the Pakistani forces, overwhelmed and outnumbered, raised the white flag of surrender. The jubilant cries of âJoy Banglaâ echoed through the air, marking the triumph of the peopleâs will over oppression.
As the sun set on December 16, 1971, Bangladesh stood tall and proud, a free nation born from the sacrifices of its valiant sons and daughters. Victory Day became a symbol of courage, unity, and the indomitable spirit of a people who refused to be shackled any longer.

Not just a date. A reminder of what it took for a country to stand on its own.
1971 wasnât that long ago. Real people. Real sacrifice. Nothing was handed over.
Growing up, you hear the stories. As you get older, you begin to understand the weight of that sacrifice, that loss, and that fight for independence.
Today isnât about posting a flag and moving on. Itâs about remembering why that flag exists.
Respect to those who fought, those who were lost, and the families who carried that pain forward.

Shubo Noboborsho from Bangladesh Development Project! Today marks the first day of the Bengali New Year (Pohela Boishakh), a celebration rooted in Mughal-era reforms under Emperor Akbar, who introduced the Bangla calendar to simplify tax collection. Over time, it evolved into a vibrant cultural festival symbolizing unity, renewal, and hope for the year ahead.
