Serving our neighbors is at the heart of the mission of the Binghampton Development Corporation (BDC). The BDC Block Crew, is a neighborhood service funded by the Binghampton TIF through the City of Memphis’ Community Redevelopment Agency to improve cleanliness, safety, and appearance across Binghampton! Our Block crew works in public spaces to remove debris, maintain green areas, and address illegal dumping. We are thankful for this dedicated team! Last week we had a volunteer from Orion Financial, Hedges, come and join us! This Earth month and every month let’s continue building a cleaner and stronger Memphis together. #beautyofbinghampton #serve901 #choose901

Today's Binghampton Woman Who Inspires is Sharon Smith! Meet Sharon! Sharon is the Executive Director of New Dawn Social Services (NDSS). NDSS is a faith based organization that focuses on men and women being released from penal facilities, and individuals being released from rehabilitation centers. We aim to improve outcomes associated with the transition into the community and remove barriers that make this process appear insurmountable. New Dawn was inspired by Dr. Mary L. Avery, Sharon's mother. Her passion was for women in prison in the late 90s. The dream was recaptured in 2017 with Sharon's mom, sister and husband, Wesley, to include women and men RECOVERING from substance use, disorders and/or justice involved. Sharon's husband celebrated 35 years of sobriety on March 18th. Mary’s Place and Smitty’s House were named after her mom and father-in-law. Her brother was in his addiction for over 30 years. He celebrated 11 years sober in October. If a program like New Dawn had been in place back then, she believes he would have come out of his addiction earlier. Visit New Dawn Social Services at #binghamptonwomenwhoinspire#beautyofbinghampton#welovebinghampton

Our final legacy is ➡️ Kineatrist Womack or better know as "Shug"! Shug didn’t just serve at the church—she often drove around the neighborhood, personally dropping off meals to people, making sure those who couldn’t make it still had a warm plate and felt cared for. Even while living with chronic illness, Shug continued to pour love into others through her service.
