When it comes to integrating the technical and tactical components of sport into the S&C process we need to be intentional with the drills and movements we select to avoid just mimicking the sport. But instead boiling the demands of the sport down into bite sized qualities we can train. Through the isolation of sporting attributes we can dose particular actions and effectively build the athletes capacity within that context. Using 3PT curve sprints as an example. It’s using a constraint found in the sport (distance and direction) while working on acceleration. Two birds one stone. Baseline ball catches = dead stop accels with hand eye coordination. The athletes work on reacting to a stimulus (sport specific implement = ball) and executing a task (catch ball in fewest bounces possible). Waterbag work = active mobilization of hips & thoracic = dissociation. Fast unilateral decels = high SL braking which we find plenty of in the game. The idea is to mask the underlying concepts within sporting actions we can control or constrain. As well as drive direct adaptation based on the demands of the sport with specific means. A look at what a prep -> Prime - Express type of programming framework for on court athletes looks like . Prep: Pogos series to globally warm and locally prep lower limb tissues I like to start linear and vertical and graduate to multidirectional and horizontal. Prime: mixture of human and high force exposure to challenge movement literacy and reflexive strength. Express: High force and fast force exposure to tie all elements in. Mid season break so keeping things delivery low volume while maintaining a decent level of intensity. #basketball #strengthandconditioning #sports #volleyball

Inspired by what I’ve learnt first hand from @coach.care at the @vancouverbandits The use of the water bag seems to go against a lot of what I say in regards to the implementation of unstable practices. But when it comes to tissue prep and we reduce the system load and emphasis velocity we can get a really good response that activates the local and global musculature (movement dependent) and is great in prepping the system for high velocity exposures. Here we’re trying to emphasis unilateral deceleration prep with respect to the penultimate step seen in basketball layups and general on court take offs. The knee is a common site of injury for female athletes so we focus quite heavily on prepping and preparing it holistically for impact. It’s often more about laying the foundation for what the body is about to undertake rather then replicating it. Plus it’s fun and challenges balance & coordination.
