Our Ramón y Cajal and @ikerbasque Research Fellow Sergio Lucarini presented today the seminar called ‘Multiphysics multiscale modeling of multifunctional composite materials’.
Multifunctional materials are revolutionizing biomedicine, soft robotics, and smart sensors, and it is essential to predict their behavior under various physical interactions. In this talk, Lucarini presented a comprehensive finite element method (FEM) framework for modeling multifunctional materials, that solves this need.

Yesterday morning our pre-doctoral researchers Andrea Ugalde Pallarés and Eneko Sebastian Garate shared with us the progress in their PhD thesis. Andrea’s thesis is aligned with the materials for energy generation and storage, while Eneko’s focuses on digitalisation. Both of them have a fundamental sustainability approach in terms of processes and application. 🌊 Andrea Ugalde presented her work on environmentally conscious energy storage devices from marine-derived materials. Her research focuses on developing supercapacitors designed under a holistic ecodesign approach — from material selection to end-of-life — ensuring compatibility with marine ecosystems and reducing the ecological footprint of electronic waste.
🖨️ Eneko Sebastián shared progress on the development of screen-printed sensor prototypes for sustainable digitalisation. His work combines smart functional materials with environmentally friendly polymer matrices, advancing scalable printed electronics while pushing the miniaturisation limits of screen printing.
