What a weekend!
Last Saturday we brought Your Health Legacy to London in partnership with Black Health Legacy - a day dedicated to empowering our community with simple, actionable ways to improve health and wellbeing.
We were joined by an inspiring line-up of speakers who brought knowledge, honesty and energy as they covered:
๐งฌ Why representation in genomic research matters
๐ฅ Holistic health habits we can build into everyday life
๐ง How to find mental wellbeing approaches that genuinely work for us
๐ต The importance of awareness and screeningย for prostate cancer which affects 1 in 4 Black men
๐ฃ๏ธ Black Menโs Consortium who had the room laughing and moving with a taster of their wellbeing workshop
๐ฉโ๐ผ Five evidenceโbased ways to give our children the best start in life
We wrapped up with practical workshops:
Reflexology, Pilates and Soca aerobics, a brilliant way to put learning into practice and the energy in the room was incredible. ๐ ๐บ

This week is Mental Health Awareness Week ๐ฟ
This year's theme is Action โ because awareness alone isn't enough. Real change happens when we show up: for ourselves, and for each other.
Mental health touches every one of us. 1 in 4 people in the UK will experience a mental health problem this year. Yet stigma, silence, and lack of awareness still stop too many people from seeking the support they deserve.
This week, we're taking action.
That means having the conversations that feel difficult. Creating spaces where people feel safe to say "I'm not okay." And making sure that when someone is ready to reach out, they know exactly where to turn. ๐
If you or someone you know needs support, here's where to start ๐

This is what showing up for your community looks like.
On Saturday we joined Black Heritage Support Service at the Caribbean Health Exhibition in Brixton and it was a brilliant day.
Our team ran a drop-in clinic on the day, giving members of the community the chance to speak directly with a doctor. No waiting rooms, no barriers โ just access.
We were also proud to have two of our members take to the stage, delivering talks on genomics and paediatrics. Seeing our community represented at events like this never gets old.
We love supporting spaces that centre culturally inclusive health and we left feeling grateful to have been part of it.
Thank you to the organisers for having us!
We'll see you at the next one. ๐

Feeling tense or waking up with jaw pain? ๐ฌ Stress can lead to bruxism - the habit of grinding or clenching your teeth, often without realizing it.
๐ฆท Common signs and symptoms:
> Jaw or facial pain, tightness, or fatigue
> Headaches (especially around the temples)
> Worn, flattened, or sensitive teeth
> Clicking or locking in the jaw joint (TMJ)
> Disturbed sleep or aching around the ears
๐โโ๏ธ What helps:
โ๏ธ Try gentle jaw stretches and relaxation exercises
โ๏ธ Apply a warm compress to ease muscle tension
โ๏ธ Manage stress through breathing, meditation, or physical activity
โ๏ธ Avoid gum chewing and limit caffeine or alcohol
๐ฉบ When to seek advice:
๐จPersistent pain, restricted movement, broken teeth, or frequent headaches
๐จYour partner notices grinding sounds at night
Dentists and GPs can help with mouthguards, stress management, or therapies to protect your teeth and reduce strain.
Your jaw deserves a break, ease the pressure ๐

We care for others every day, but how often do we check in with ourselves? โค๏ธโ๐ฉน
In healthcare, burnout is real: nearly 1 in 2 clinicians in the UK report feeling emotionally exhausted, and more than 40% say they struggle to maintain boundaries between work and life.
๐ฟ Practical self-care reminders:
๐ฃ Leave work at work as often as possible - mental decompression matters.
๐ฃ Build mini moments of rest: five deep breaths, a walk between patients, a mindful coffee break.
๐ฃ Reflect on your values. Are you spending time where it truly aligns?
Boundaries arenโt selfish; theyโre sustainable compassion.
๐ฌ Your one action today:
Say โyesโ or โnoโ with intention. Protect what nourishes you and those you love.
We look after others, but letโs keep asking: Are we looking after ourselves too? ๐

April is Stress Awareness Month ๐
a reminder that stress affects more than our minds. Chronic stress can raise blood pressure, weaken immunity, and increase risk of heart disease, diabetes, and anxiety.
๐ Research shows that Caribbean and minority communities often face higher stress levels due to systemic inequalities โ from financial strain and racism to limited access to culturally sensitive mental health support. These pressures donโt just sit in the mind โ they show up in the body too.
๐ฟ Ways to protect your wellbeing:
๐ฃTalk it out โ with trusted friends, family, or faith leaders
๐ฃMove your body daily, even through dancing or walking
๐ฃSet digital and emotional boundaries to recharge
๐ฃPractise self-compassion; you donโt have to do it all
๐ค Where to get help:
GP or mental health services for ongoing symptoms
Culturally informed organisations like @blackmindsmatterofficial or @BAATN
Community groups that offer safe spaces for shared experiences
This month, letโs open the conversation for healing, rest, and support. ๐

๐ Purple Day raises awareness of epilepsy worldwide.
In the UK, around 630,000 people live with epilepsy โ including many within Caribbean and Black communities.
However, stigma and misunderstanding around seizures still exist in some communities, where epilepsy may sometimes be linked to myths, fear, or silence rather than recognised as a neurological medical condition.
Awareness matters because:
๐ 1 in 100 people in the UK has epilepsy
๐ 1 in 20 people will have a seizure in their lifetime
๐ With treatment, up to 70% of people can live seizure-free
Open conversations help people seek care earlier, feel supported, and live safely.
โ Learn seizure first aid
โ Challenge stigma
โ Support inclusion in schools, workplaces & communities
๐ Wear purple today and tag someone helping to raise awareness or support neurological health in our communities.

๐โจ A Happy Mouth is a Happy Life!
This yearโs 2026 campaign reminds us that oral health is more than just bright smiles โ itโs essential to overall well-being, at every stage of life. Letโs work together to make healthy smiles possible for everyone, everywhere. ๐

Caribbean women have played a vital role in shaping the NHS across generations. Long before Windrush and ever since, their contribution has strengthened UK healthcare at every level - from nurses, doctors, dentists, midwives, pharmacists, public health leaders and academics.
They have cared for communities, led services, trained future professionals and advocated for equity in healthcare. Their impact has been immeasurable.
This month, we recognise their resilience, leadership and legacy โ and celebrate their continued influence across the UK.
Representation in healthcare leadership still matters โ and so does honouring those who paved the way.
The NHS story includes Caribbean women.
And it always has.
โจ Tag a Caribbean woman in healthcare who inspires you.
