🪼Yesterday there was a Medusa apocalypse on the beach. Medusa everywhere — on the new moon in Taurus conjunct Algol, the fixed star of the Gorgon. Before patriarchy, Medusa was the Paleolithic snake Goddess. Her snakes were kundalini. Her gaze was power. Patriarchy severed her head and called her a monster. Algol is her star. It blinks in the night sky which ancient astronomers found uncanny. They named it the Demon Star. They were afraid of what they couldn’t contain. We are in a time of restoration. Women awakening to power that owes nothing to patriarchy. Power not defined by proximity to men. Sacred rage. Sovereign beauty. The truth that clears the room. Like the gaze of Medusa turning men to stone whatever falls away in the wake of your truth was never meant to be there. Women are being asked en masse to stand in their power. On Sacred Objects and the Patriarchal Gaze — link in bio. Something bizarre happened the last time I installed pyramids in Ibiza. It’s what moved me to write this. The essay that followed became something larger — about how women, sacred objects, and sacred feminine objects in particular, get co-opted, attacked, and erased. It moves through Jeff Koons exhibiting a 26,000-year-old Gravettian goddess figurine as “Balloon Venus” at the Museum of Cycladic Art — a Venus my ancestors have a direct lineage to — while being named in the Epstein files. My own experience bringing my work into an institution like Hauser & Wirth. And the broader climate those of us with female bodies are navigating right now. It’s grounded in scholarship.
