I usually don’t write a long meteorological dissertation in my posts, but the severe weather setup over the next day or two deserves a little deeper dive.
Most of the Midwest has a severe weather risk, especially west of us. Damaging winds appear to be the main threat, but tornadoes will also be possible, especially farther west into Kansas and perhaps with stronger line segments moving east tomorrow night.
What happens tonight and tomorrow morning may play a major role in tomorrow evening’s setup. It’s the domino effect — one atmospheric change leading to another change in storm behavior and intensity.
Thunderstorms are expected to develop later tonight across Kansas and Nebraska and then move east overnight. Some weakening is possible before they reach KC, but gusty winds could still be an issue.
One thing that certainly raises an eyebrow for me is the amount of wind energy available. I mean it is gusty today (Sunday) without a storm nearby! Winds just above the surface may approach hurricane force at times, and when combined with strong wind shear, the atmosphere will have plenty of “spin” available for storms.
There is also a recurring theme here that has me especially uneasy: many of these storms may occur at night. Severe weather under the cloak of darkness always requires extra attention from all of us.
And on top of that, some of the same areas north of KC already dealing with flooding issues may have additional severe weather piled onto an already difficult situation.
These setups are tricky, and overnight storms or lingering clouds tomorrow could still alter parts of the forecast.
So please stay extra weather aware tomorrow evening and tomorrow night — and make sure you have multiple ways to receive weather information in the event of power outages. #GettingYouPrepared #FirstAlert #AlertDay

Some portions of the KMBC viewing area were absolutely clobbered by severe storms and incredible amounts of rain.
A few communities picked up between 5 and nearly 9 inches of rain in less than 24 hours. In the hardest-hit areas, water rescues became far too common overnight.
Unfortunately, those same areas could see additional storms again today, with a broader round of active weather expected across much of the region tomorrow evening and overnight. All modes of severe weather will be possible.
After the month we’ve already had… this is the last thing many communities needed.

It’s been a while since we’ve seen a tornado season this active around here—but history always has a surprise.
On this date in 1968 — a tornado touched down just southwest of Anchorage. That’s rare air… it was only the second of just six tornadoes ever reported in Alaska since 1950.
And here’s a myth-buster: all 50 states have recorded tornadoes.
