“What’s not being pointed out enough is that the culture comes first. The cultural movement is Breaking — that is the foundation. Over the years, we’ve gone from it being primarily a party dance to also becoming an athletic practice with competitions attached to it. The movement has evolved, and it’s very different from its original form. To me, that doesn’t mean the elders no longer have a say. It just means that, in certain areas, their input may not be as applicable anymore — especially when it comes to the modern movement-based side of Breaking. Unless they’re about to help me do an airflare, you feel me? LOL As elders, there also has to be a level of maturity in understanding where they fit within the current landscape. It’s similar to the relationship between a parent and a grown sibling or child — you don’t control how they live, you guide them. The elders can debate amongst themselves all they want, but the message to the broader community of breakers needs a bridge. It needs people who understand both sides: the realm of movement and the realm of documentation, culture, and history.
