ABOVE THE CROWD, MEET THE JUDGE DJ SOPE Hul Sophoan, known professionally as DJ Sope, is a Cambodian musician and DJ widely regarded as one of the founding fathers of Cambodian hip hop. He played a pivotal role in introducing and nurturing the genre in Cambodia during its formative years in the late 1990s and early 2000s . DJ Sope is credited with being one of the first people in Cambodia to import and popularize American hip hop music, particularly through bootlegged copies of tapes from Khmer-American artists like Prach Ly . This act of bridging the diaspora sound with the motherland was crucial in sparking local interest in rap. Beyond being a tastemaker, DJ Sope was a mentor to the first wave of Khmer rappers. Most notably, he took in a young, struggling man named Hin Chamnan from the poverty-stricken Boeung Kaplhaok area. Chamnan, who would later become the rapper A Ping, moved in with DJ Sope, who exposed him to hip hop's creative and educational potential. This mentorship directly led to the creation of one of Cambodia's first Khmer-language rap albums, Life in Kaplhaok Pond . ABOVE THE CROWD, MEET THE JUDGE VIBOL LIM Vibol Lim is a Franco-Cambodian dancer and cultural pioneer widely recognized as a founding father of Cambodia's hip-hop dance scene and the creator of the RomBak Battle, the country's first international hip-hop competition . Born in France and raised in the cosmopolitan suburb of Sarcelles, Vibol's journey with hip-hop began in Paris. While studying at the Lycée Auguste Renoir, he was recruited into the school's breakdance team, which became his entry point into the vibrant hip-hop culture of the 1990s. He drew inspiration from watching VHS tapes and attending battles in iconic spots like Les Halles and La Défense . After a conventional career path led him to pause dancing, Vibol took a leap of faith and accepted a creative manager position in Cambodia. This move reconnected him with his country of origin and its burgeoning hip-hop scene. He soon met key figures like DJ Illest and Sok Visal, and crucially, encountered the life-changing work of the NGO Tiny Toones in 2011. Founded by former US refugee Tuy "Kay-Kay" Sobil, Tiny Toones uses hip-hop to educate and empower underprivileged youth, a mission that deeply resonated with Vibol . In 2013, driven by the belief that "hip hop can save lives," Vibol co-founded the RomBak Battle (derived from the Khmer word for breakdance, Roam Kbayk) alongside B-Boy Peanut and B-Girl Melski . What began as small battles at the Meta House and Slur Bar quickly grew into a professional, internationally recognized event.
