Eating healthy is expensive. And for those in fresh food deserts, the cost only gets higher. Which is why growing your own food is really like growing your own money. For many of the millions of American’s living in these food deserts, focusing on the financial benefits is a more compelling reason to grow than health is. This insight lead to the ‘People’s Treasury’, for The Ron Finley Project. It started with beautiful seed paper bills and instructions on how to successfully save money through a garden, and culminated in a 3.1 mile march (the average distance people in fresh food deserts have to travel for afresh produce) to plant a garden in front of the US Treasury. With zero dollars, this campaign elevated RF’s local mission to the national stage.
