‘If we want to break down the stigma around fertility and infertility, then those conversations need to happen in the sunlight’ In a special episode of Woman’s Hour recently we explored difficult conversations - why we often feel ill-equipped to initiate them and how we can all approach them better. For many, one conversation that can be incredibly complex is the discussion about whether or not to try to have children. That’s something TV presenter and podcast host @vickypattison has spoken about very openly. Speaking to @bbcnuala she shared how it felt to make a documentary, Maybe Baby, with her husband as they navigated that decision, and why she wanted to speak publicly about something so personal. If you missed this special programme - which also featured comedian @itsmehelenthorn , psychotherapist and international conflict mediator Gabrielle Rifkind, and many more great guests - you can listen back on @bbcsounds . It’s the Woman’s Hour episode from 4 May 🎧 💭 How do you approach having difficult conversations in your own life? We’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments below ✍️⬇️ . . . #throwbackthursday #health #fertility #infertility #women

‘It’s a completely new way of delivering babies’ 🤱 For decades, the tools used to assist women in labour have barely changed… until now. A new inflatable medical device called the OdonAssist has been introduced in eight NHS trusts, as an alternative to forceps or vacuum extraction (ventouse). It’s designed to cause less trauma to babies and their mothers. @bbcnuala was joined by NHS obstetrician Dr Emily Hotton, who was involved in the clinical trials, and Charlie Fuller, Vice President of the company behind the device. They gave Nuala some insight into how it works - and even showed her how to use it 👀 The NHS says that existing devices, such as forceps and ventouse, are safe and only used when necessary. All devices have different risks and benefits. For more information, speak to your doctor. Listen to the full interview on @bbcsounds - it’s the Woman’s Hour episode from 12 May 🎧 . . . #bbcwomanshour #women #pregnancy #health

‘We do the jiggle, scoop and swoop… to put on your bra correctly’ Does your bra fit you properly? 👀 M&S have announced that they are ditching the measuring tape for bra fittings. They will fit bras by eye instead. This follows what other underwear retailers have done. But how can you tell if your bra fits properly, if you choose to wear one? 💭 Bra expert and online bra fitter Katie Weir @weirwonderful is here to help! She joined @bbcnuala on Woman’s Hour and shared her top tips for making sure you’re properly supported 🙌 They were also joined by Joanna Wakefield-Scurr, Professor of Biomechanics at @portsmouthuni , to share why it’s so important to wear a bra that fits well. Listen to the full interview on @bbcsounds - It’s the episode from 11 May 🎧 What’s your relationship with your bra size? Have you had a fitting or did you rely on trial and error? ‘It’s normal for a baby to be waking and needing parental support to get back to sleep’ 😴 A new investigation by BBC News has taken a closer look at the unregulated world of self-styled ‘baby sleep influencers’, or ‘sleep consultants’, with medical professionals warning some are giving advice that could put babies at risk of serious harm. Senior BBC reporter @divyatalwar21 and NHS midwife Olivia Hinge joined @bbcnuala in the Woman’s Hour studio and shared what the investigation found. Whilst some practitioners have legitimate medical training, others with no qualifications were offering dangerous advice to exhausted parents. Speaking on Woman’s Hour, Olivia also shared some practical tips for families struggling with infant sleep, who may be looking for support. For trusted information and guidance regarding your baby’s sleep, head to the NHS website or speak to your GP. And if you’ve been affected by anything discussed in this post, visit the BBC Action Line website for links to support. You can listen to the full conversation on BBC Sounds - it’s the Woman’s Hour episode from 5 May 📻 . . . #bbcwomanshour #bbcsounds #babysleepadvice #sleep #Advice @olivia_lactation_consultant
