Keir Starmer will not seek to block Andy Burnham from becoming the Labour candidate in Makerfield, the BBC understands. No10 has indicated to Labour MPs that it will not seek to block Burnham, though the final decision will still rest with Labour's ruling national executive committee. The news comes after Makerfield MP Josh Simons said he would step-down in order to allow the current Manchester mayor to run for parliament. Greater Manchester mayor Andy Burham has said he wishes to stand in a by-election in Makerfield triggered by Josh Simons standing down. In a statement, Burnham said that he grew up in Makerfield "and have lived here for 25 years. I care deeply about it and its people. I know they have been let down by national politics." He added that people need change from "a national level" to make everyday life affordable. If Burnham was to win the by-election, it would give him a chance to challenge Keir Starmer's leadership of the Labour Party. However, first the former health secretary would need to be granted permission to run for parliament by Labour's ruling national executive committee. "That is the fight. I believe Andy is the one to lead it." Labour MP for Makerfield Josh Simons has said he will step aside to give Andy Burnham the chance to earn a place in parliament. Simons said the decision to resign "has not been an easy" one to make, however, he believes that if elected the current Greater Manchester mayor could "drive the change our country is crying out for". "We have lost the trust of those our party was built to serve. It is my unwavering belief that nothing short of urgent, radical, courageous reform will make a difference," he added. The Makerfield MP's resignation would trigger a by-election, which if Burnham was to win, would give him a chance to challenge Keir Starmer's leadership of the Labour Party.
