Radio is saving lives on Lake Victoria.
Early weather information shared through radio helps fishing communities prepare for changing conditions on the lake — often before the day even begins.
More engaging and understandable radio programming has reduced deaths from drowning because people know when it's safe to go out, and when to stay home.
It is also helping people plan for the fishing season — preparing harvests, repairing boats, accessing markets, and avoiding losses.

We’re delighted to share that our children’s audio show in Gaza, Storytime with Zaza and Zuzu, has bagged the WAN-IFRA Middle Eastern Digital Media Award for the Best Use of Audio!
The jury described the series as “an excellent example of how journalism can connect meaningfully with listeners”, praising its carefully crafted soundscapes, strong scripts and believable children’s voices.
Aimed to provide educational entertainment and psychosocial support, the show uses audio storytelling to create moments of safety, connection and emotional relief in wartime. In its first season, it reached more than 25,000 children in over 200 listening sessions in Gaza; today, we’ve produced over 80 episodes that are now airing for Palestinian children across West Bank and Gaza.

“Taking action against abuses is extremely difficult because those in positions of authority are often the same individuals responsible for handling complaints,” shares a woman journalist from Tanzania. “Many women find it hard to report such cases, leading some to resign, step down from leadership roles, or move from one media organisation to another in search of a safer working environment.”
Sexual harassment in media is a pervasive issue – yet it frequently goes unreported.
In 2025, we partnered with WAN-IFRA WIN and City, St George's University of London to conduct a multi-country study examining how the situation in media workplaces has evolved over the last several years, and what more needs to be done.

A safe, respectful media workplace should be non-negotiable, but an upcoming report reveals just how little has changed in the last five years for female journalists.
BBC Media Action worked with WAN-IFRA Women in News and City St Georges, University of London to survey female journalists around the world, including in Bangladesh, to expose the true scale of sexual harassment in media workplaces.
In Bangladesh, 15% of journalists reported workplace sexual harassment, with women facing far higher levels of verbal, online and physical abuse than men.
We are equipping female journalists in Bangladesh, with practical skills to respond to harassment and support colleagues.

Mercy Mulenga is a journalist at Yar FM Radio in Zambia’s Copperbelt Province. She trained under BBC Media Action’s MOTO Initiative, which supports female journalists in developing public interest journalism skills.
“I'm committed to covering the issues that matter most to my community, ranging from health and family planning to the environment and social costs of mining,” says Mercy
Recently, she investigated a toxic waste leak from a local mine into the Kafue River, uncovering severe pollution that left local farmers with poisoned vegetables and no compensation.
“I was shocked when I saw how bad the river and the land were polluted,” says Mercy. “The investigation revealed not only environmental destruction, but also a painful gap in justice and compensation for the affected farmers.”

For journalism students in Armenia, the real test begins beyond the classroom - shaping reporting into clear, compelling stories under pressure.
“To be successful, students need to know how to find stories, pitch them at editorial meetings, develop creative treatments and turn them around fast on the day” says Wendy Pilmer, BBC Media Action consultant and former Head of BBC Northeast & Cumbria.
BBC Media Action partnered with eight media outlets and Yerevan State University (YSU) to run a practical boot camp, equipping young journalists with real‑world skills for a fast‑paced industry.
Around 30 final-year undergraduate students attended the sessions as part of the university’s academic curriculum, gaining hands‑on experience in newsroom‑style conditions.
