Not a hike, 2021
video performance
The video documents a hike that my father
and I took together, his very first hike ever !!!
during which he recounts his sacrifices and the challenges he faced while crossing the Mexico border into the United States. Although he often shared these stories with me, this was the first time I formally recorded them. The hike is especially significant, as it was his first creating a layered parallel between a recreational hike and the physical and emotional
endurance required for migration.
The performance is titled “NOT A HIKE,
” emphasizing the contrast between voluntary outdoor
activity and the harsh realities of crossing a border.
Thank you @patricia.encarnacion.c for curating a beautiful screening show tonight 5-8pm

BURNING THE MASK
Opening Reception
Thursday, March 19 | 6-8pm
• 20 Cooper Square Gallery
RSVP link in bio.
Curated by Patricia Encarnación
(@patricia.encarnacion.c ), Burning the Mask draws on Frantz Fanon's Black Skin, White Masks to name the crisis of assimilation, and to insist against imposed identities: a refusal to keep performing the hegemonic mask. Anchored in ancestral memory, embodied authenticity, and radical love,
In a moment shaped by escalations racialized surveillance, and culture-war governance, positioned between Abya Yala and Caribbean diasporic epistemologies, the exhibition traces how respectability politics and "model minority" legibility reproduce hierarchy, while these artists interrupt that script, burning through social compliance to make room for more honest ways of being.
Happy New Year. Closing the chapter of 2025 it was a crazy roller coaster year. I grew so much as an artist. I’m incredibly grateful for the people in my life, for the love, and for the joy.
The year started very rough, with Los Angeles on fire, and at the same time I was working on my thesis. Still, I’m so grateful for all the art i made.
May 2026 be a beautiful year with more art and more love.
2025 highlights (too many to list): • artwork champion ✔️ • Graduated from Yale ✔️👩🎓 • Finished my thesis ✔️🌹
. My parents visited New York for the first time I paid • Moved from the East Coast back to the West Coast rough and very expensive ✔️🫂
And let’s not forget: I overcame all of this while my city was on fire, dealing with an autoimmune condition, going to doctors and hospitals, 🙃
I finished the year working at Stars Hollow 🥹✨ #brendabarrios
