Some threads for artifacts we represent at Baum-kuchen come through such serendipitous encounters. It’s what keeps me curious and wide-eyed even after many years of being a curator behind Baum-kuchen collection. The thread with Taku-san @chicktack_bamboocraftworks has not been an exception. The bamboo baskets by Taku-san are born in the quiet bamboo forest on Yakushima Island, where Taku-san himself harvests bamboo as a material. From there, he is involved in every part of bamboo basket-making, from processing bamboo to finishing the baskets. The traditional weaving patterns not only make the baskets sturdy but also incredibly beautiful. In today’s world, where we are accustomed to seeing many parts of everyday products made of synthetic materials, these baskets stand out in bamboo’s singularity and purity. While holding the basket, it’s easy to be swept away, over time and space, into a quiet bamboo forest on a remote island in Japan, where it came from.
It’s Taku-san and BK’s hope that his bamboo baskets continue their adventures, spanning many circles of life from our hands into yours. We hope these baskets inspire slower moments, meaningful rituals, and a deeper appreciation for the beauty found in natural materials and handmade craftsmanship. -wakako
