Art is a constructive way to present conversations; colonialism, and the state of the ocean addressed as Seelife, to move forward.

⚡𝟵 𝗱𝗮𝘆𝘀 𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗹 𝗯𝗶𝗱𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗴𝗼𝗲𝘀 𝗹𝗶𝘃𝗲!⚡ 📅 FREE online auction registration opens TOMORROW, Sept 19 📅 Online bidding opens Sept 27 📅 Exhibition opening celebration on Sunday, Sept 28, 3–6PM at the museum Discover five more artists, all with deep ties to West Marin, in this year’s online auction and exhibition: 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗹𝗶𝗲 𝗖𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗮𝗵𝗮𝗻 (@batrayz ) Callahan’s multidisciplinary practice draws from the California coast, often incorporating found marine debris. His recurring sea urchins and sea stars, scaled up into mandalas, become emblems of ecology, humor, and interconnection. 𝗔𝗷𝗶𝘁 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝘂𝗵𝗮𝗻 (@ajitttchauhan ) Working with erasure as both medium and gesture, Chauhan transforms found postcards into meditations on creation and destruction. In 𝘈𝘶𝘵𝘶𝘮𝘯, spider webs map space like globes, evoking interdependence and impermanence. 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗿𝗮𝗱 (@art_marfeco ) Working under the moniker Marfeco, Conrad moves between painting, sculpture, and public art. In 𝘝𝘪𝘦𝘸 𝘍𝘳𝘰𝘮 𝘔𝘺 𝘚𝘵𝘶𝘥𝘪𝘰 7, she captures the immediacy of place through oil on canvas, a continuation of her practice shaped by time spent across France, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, and the Bay Area. 𝗣𝗲𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗱𝗲 𝗦𝘄𝗮𝗿𝘁 A sculptor and mixed-media artist, de Swart creates series across painting and sculpture. In 𝘏𝘢𝘭𝘧 𝘐𝘯𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘵𝘦𝘥, shaped edges reframe the picture plane, reflecting his interest in perception, light, and the unseen. 𝗟𝘂𝗰𝗶𝗮 𝗗𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗺𝗮𝗻 (@lu_shiso ) Working on silk and fabric, Dillman explores shimmer, transparency, and symbolic motifs. In 𝘜𝘯𝘵𝘪𝘵𝘭𝘦𝘥 (𝘔𝘰𝘵𝘩, 𝘔𝘰𝘰𝘯, 𝘝𝘰𝘭𝘤𝘢𝘯𝘰), light and pattern weave together, creating visual music from natural and cultural forms.

Join us Saturday, August 30 from 3–4:30PM at the Bolinas Museum for an afternoon of conversation reflecting on water as both subject and material within artistic practice. Exhibiting artists Charlie Callahan (@batrayz ), Kristiana Chan 莊礼恩 (@kristi_chan ), Aubrey Trinnaman (@waubi_saubi ) and Tanja Geis (@geis.t ), whose work in featured in 𝘏𝘰𝘭𝘥 𝘍𝘢𝘴𝘵, and Shao-Feng Hsu (@shaofenghsu ), whose work is featured in 𝘍𝘳𝘰𝘮 𝘉𝘦𝘭𝘰𝘸, will be in dialogue with Marialidia Marcotulli (@deepervisions ), Bolinas Museum Board President, @withitgirl founder, and water scholar. Through drawing, sculpture, installation, and photography, these artists reveal how water connects human and nonhuman life: considering the ocean as a site of memory and survival, the histories of extraction and migration shaping our coasts, and water as both an archive and a shapeshifter. Free and open to all!

Charlie Callahan’s (@batrayz ) work is rooted in his connection to the sea and creatures of the California coastline; water, mud, the spectrum of light, patterns, color, textures and imagery all inform his multidisciplinary practice. With humor, Callahan confronts complex environmental challenges, often incorporating beached detritus to serve as provocative materials for his paintings and sculptures. Recurring imagery of sea urchins and sea stars often appear exaggerated in size or quantity as symbols of the significance of humanity’s impact on oceanic ecosystems. Urchins are transformed into mandalas, representing the interconnectedness of all things, and sea stars come to represent humanity’s evolutionary and ancestral connection to five-fold, symmetrical beings. 𝗪𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝗱𝗶𝗱 𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗼 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗹𝗶𝗳𝗲? 𝗔: Art came into my life as self-entertainment as a child, growing up amidst the chaos of a large, economically challenged family. Later, as an outdoor adventurer, my surf practice led me to an understanding of ocean ecosystems and their decline. Art-making became not only a process of self-healing, but a way to pursue intentions for a healthier Earth. 𝗤: 𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗱𝗼𝗲𝘀 𝗰𝗼𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗻 𝗶𝗻𝗳𝗹𝘂𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗮𝘀 𝗮𝗻 𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗶𝘀𝘁? 𝗔: West Marin is the first place I’ve ever returned to in my nomadic life of seeking space to create and be inspired. As challenging as it can be to make a living as an artist here, the landscape fosters a deeply introspective relationship with a vibrant and well-protected ecology. This place is home to artists and writers who have encouraged my path. My hope is that it continues to sustain artists with the time that is so precious, yet increasingly overwhelmed by the cost of living. Humanity needs artists to lead the way, now more than ever. 𝗤: 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴, 𝗹𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗼, 𝘄𝗮𝘁𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗰𝗼𝗼𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗹𝘆? 𝗔: I recently attended @robgmacfarlane ’s book talk for Is a River Alive? at the @thedancepalaceptreyes . I cook organic meals and love the fermented foods from the @west_marin_culture_shop . I’m also grateful for @gospelflatshowspace .
