The terracotta-coloured garden shed, “The Blooming Shed”, serves as a sanctuary for patients and staff alike. The Double Glazed House reimagines a Victorian home in East London through a carefully crafted contemporary extension. A sculptural volume of hand-thrown green glazed bricks reads as a single monolithic form, shaped through bespoke detailing and digital craftsmanship.

The Blooming Shed addresses mental health not with clinical sterility but through an architecture of empathy, engagement, and environmental connection. It provides a sanctuary for service users with complex needs, carers, NHS staff, and the broader Enfield community, offering a venue for activities ranging from structured therapeutic interventions to informal gatherings, gardening, mindfulness sessions, and creative workshops.

Over the moon to be longlisted in the @dezeenawards_ for The Blooming Shed.
The Blooming Shed is a kinetic garden pavilion at Chase Farm Hospital, designed to support mental health through connection to nature.
Commissioned by the North London NHS Foundation Trust, the pavilion replaces a derelict structure with a flexible, timber-framed space featuring a unique sliding polycarbonate facade that opens fully to the surrounding garden.

Im Gemeinschaftsgarten des Chase Farm Hospitals in Nord- London steht seit Kurzem ein kleines Gebäude mit großer Aussage. „The Blooming Shed“ wurde von BAT Studio als Teil eines Programms zur Entwicklung neuer Räume für mentale Gesundheit errichtet. Entstanden ist ein feiner Holzbau mit beweglicher Fassade, gebaut mit minimalem Budget und maximaler Genauigkeit.

Architecture that blossoms
In the community garden of Chase Farm Hospital in North London, a small building with a big statement has recently been erected. ‘The Blooming Shed’ was built by BAT Studio as part of a programme to develop new spaces for mental health. The result is a delicate timber structure with a movable facade, built on a minimal budget and with maximum precision.
