Last week I had the honour to speak at @universitaetbern about conservation efforts to protect populations of the Amazon river turtle (Podocnemis expansa), and Yellow-spotted river turtle (Podocnemis unifilis) along the Rio Trombetas in Brazil.
A few years ago, I attended this very PACE (Plant & Animal Conservation Ecology) seminar myself as an undergraduate. It was a privilege to return and present to the next generation of ecologists, conservationists and evolutionary biologists, and be warmly welcomed at the long-running „Biobier“. Thanks you, Dr. Jean-Yves Humbert, and the @fsbiobern for the invitation and hospitality.

The first time I saw so many caiman close to each other during the day was on my trip through the pantanal. Since it haven‘t been raining for quite a while the ponds where small, which makes them all aggregate.
Caimam yacare is one of the most common caimans in Brazils‘ wetlands.

A cat beeing a cat. Starring, yawing, sleeping, making faces. This is what describes a cat best for me. I am not particularly a cat lover. They all have some type of attitude.
But, honestly seeing one of this kind in the wild, is a different story. This muscle packed hunter is very impressive and they are incredibly pretty. Jaguars have one of the strongest bites out there, penetrating caiman skin and turtles shells with ease. Their fur blends perfectly in the vegetation of the Pantanal and I am sure without our guide, we would have missed some of them. We saw in two days 8 individuals, which is kind of lucky. So i hope your next encounter with one of these creatures is as well from a save distance and you can enjoy the moment, rather then fear for your life.
With a remaining population of 4000 - 7000 individuals in the Pantanal alone chances are high you see one. Yet, they are still under the pressure of habitat loss.

On of the biggest frogs in the world is the smoky jugle frog (Leptodactylus pentadactylus). Whyle females reach close to 19 cm in size and males are just as big (close to 18 cm). They are serious predators. Due to their size they eat everything from ivertebrates, reptiles, amphibians even small mammals and birds. At the end lf the the they, if you are big, there is someone bigger than you.
For its self defence it can produce a lot of toxic muscus resulting in human skin rashes and stinging, by contact. It can result as well in swelling your muscus membranes and affect your eyes when in the same room and handle this frog. Additionally it makes the frog very slipery and difficult to catch. But it doesnt end there. As many others he has the ability to inflate him self and take an upright position to impress potential predators.
Btw it has a very characteristic call! (I dont have one recorded but you find it in the internet)
Picture 4: Next to my shoe (I wear European 45)
Picture 5: Same species but very different region. Its not a missmatch edit. One is more red while the other is more orange.

Todays post is much less color intensive than ghe last ones. There is another mechanism some animals use to avoid beeing eaten by their predators. One is mimicry the other camouflage. In the case of stickinsects, we find them to mimic branches. A so called cryptic species. As you can see in picture two, compared to the small leave, this guy was around 2 cm, max 3 cm. So this one here is from the family Proscopiidae and known as stick grasshoppers.
If you spend long enough in nature your eyes and your brain adapt and you are able to see and discover small little lifes in their own little world. Whenever you spend time away from your phone and you pass some plants, have a look. There might be something cool hidden. Works as well in your garden.
Species: unknown. Family: Proscopiidae
From its size it could be a very small species or even a juvenile. Guesses and explanations in the comments are as always very welcome!
Thank you for the family! @mmmsoares_

We found this Amazon water snake (Hydrops martii) on one of the past expeditions. We went up the Rio Purus and I took part on this expedition mainly to film. Nevertheless there is always time to dial in photomode.
This snake can get as long as 1.2 m! So this one was fairly short. Because of the characteristic pattern we were initially not sure what species it was. As it turned out to be a so called ‚false coral snake‘, and therefore not venomous, made it more chill to photograph this little guy.
If you want to learn more about this expedition you find more information in the link in my bio!

I remeber my first iMac I bought to produce music, not actually pictures and videos. I chose a wallpaper similar to that picture of an Ara ararauna (blue-and-yellow macaw). I was so impressed by its colors especially back then on the new retina dispalys it looked amazing! I hoped to see them in the wild. And I did! I will share a reel in the near future, where we were in the middle of nowhere and a tree in the middle of a small village was full of them!
By the way they are suuuper noisy!!!

Some of you may know some of these famous colorfull mostly poisonous frogs. But this species is really one of the highlights I saw in the wild. The Ranitomeya amazonica (Schulte 1999) belonging to the Ranitomeya variabilis species group are known to science since 1975 collectet in French Guiana. In real life its an incredibly brilliant species and as you can see swiping through the slides, an incredbiliy small frog. Not much bigger than my thumb and I have fairly small fingers. They may look like candy, but I really dont recommend to eat them since they are chemically defended by various chemicals some of them belonging to alkaloids sequestred through their diet.
I really hope to see more of this species in the future. fingers crossed!

On one of my latest expeditions we found this gorgous orange tree boa (Corallus hortulanus), when we were walking several km into the forest at night to put some camera traps.
I am always super happy and excited to see snakes. Even though I work with frogs, seeing a snake is always a highlight for me!
The last picture shows the vegetation we found it in. I always take pictures of wildblife without touching or handeling them, except they would get collected. But in this cas it was sitting on eye level and even showed of some nice poses.
Beware too always threat the animals with respect, so you can be proud of your pictures.

Its very common that peoplenliving in the atlantic rainforest habe outside their house some feeders where they provide banans oder sugar-sirup for the bird around the house. That way they are easy to see and allow for a capture of their beauty. To see this birds inside the first is a different story, not even talking ablut getting a proper picture with hundreds of branches in the way.
Short tip. Since i didnt upload recently i forgot about the colorspace shift when sending from lightroom (export sRGB) to the phone. I now simply correct in lightroom again e voila the colors are back. Sorry for the de saturated last two posts. But this technicality is not fun at all. It really depends on your device how you percive my edit. It anyways always looks best uncropped on my macbook 😆
