Today, our team witnessed and participated in LGBTQ2SIA+ history in the making! Governor Tina Kotek signed House Bill 4088 into law, making trans Oregonians, the families who support them, and the providers who care for them safer to simply live and care for one another. We are so proud to have worked on this bill alongside our many coalition partners. 🌈✨🏳️‍⚧️🏛️🏳️‍🌈

Reproductive freedom shouldn’t depend on who is in the White House. While President Trump defunds Planned Parenthood, Oregon is doing the opposite - protecting patients, protecting providers, and expanding access. As long as I am Governor, our state will not back down.

Multnomah County is proposing a $221,000 cut to The Marie Equi Center during a time of rapidly increasing need. We are one of the only culturally specific, low-barrier day centers serving unhoused queer and trans adults in our region. For many community members, Equi is the only violence-free entry point into the homelessness response system. As anti-trans hostility and housing instability continue to rise nationwide, Portland cannot claim to be a safe haven for LGBTQAI2S+ people while dismantling one of the only culturally specific queer and trans stabilization spaces in the region. It's time to remind our electeds that safety is the promise, but investment is the delivery. Several homelessness programs are expected to close after June 30, placing even greater strain on the systems that remain. This is not the time to destabilize critical front-end infrastructure. We need our community to speak up. Submit written testimony urging Multnomah County Commissioners to: • Reject the proposed cuts • Protect queer & trans stabilization infrastructure • Invest in culturally specific systems of care Find information on submitting testimony here: bit.ly/saveequi (Image descriptions in alt text) #ProtectTransLives #PortlandOregon #TransHousingJustice #LGBTQIA2S #MutualAid #HousingJustice #TransLiberation #QueerPortland #PublicHealth #HomelessnessResponse

Happy Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander Heritage Month! In May, we celebrate and honor the rich history, diversity, and contributions of AANHPI communities. We must also continue to fight against the ongoing targeting of our immigrant and BIPOC neighbors. Here at Basic Rights Oregon, we know that LGBTQ2SIA+ rights are immigrant rights, and we recognize the intersectionality of our identities and our struggle. Read our newsletter at the link in bio for info on how to report ICE, updates on upcoming events, and more.

Last week, Republican gubernatorial candidate Chris Dudley released an ad targeting some of the most vulnerable members of our community, trans kids, to score cheap political points. Watch Basic Rights Oregon's Major Gifts Officer, Mikki Gillette, respond. The anti-trans ad claims that allowing trans girls to compete in women’s sports causes harm to cis girls. At BRO, we reject this inaccurate and discriminatory rhetoric. In the words of our Executive Director, Kyndall Mason, "Hatred toward trans people is an intentional distraction from the very real threats to our democracy."
