A traditional Queenslander reworked through light, scale and connection.
The original home remains to the street, opening into a contemporary rear addition centred around expansive living, outdoor entertainment and the landscape beyond. Double-height voids, large openings and layered screening bring natural light deep into the home while strengthening the connection between inside and out. A softer material palette and integrated planting balances the cleaner architectural forms, creating a home that feels both refined and grounded.

Welcome to RETREAT.
A transformation of an existing home into a more refined, layered and considered retreat, bringing a greater sense of warmth, connection and flexibility to the way the home is experienced.
By opening connections between spaces, introducing new entertaining zones and creating quieter moments throughout, the home was completely reworked. The original form and soaring rooflines remain, while the renovation focused on softening both the interiors and exterior elevations through warmth, materiality and carefully resolved detail.
The result is a home that feels both expansive and intimate, refined yet relaxed, reshaping the original foundation into something more connected to retreat and everyday living.

We're excited to share some renders of Alexandra Rd, a compact site pushed to its limits. Designed within a tight footprint, the home centres around a private internal courtyard- drawing light deep into the floorplan while creating a calm retreat at its core.
Layered materiality, bold forms and clean lines shape the design creating a refined street presence within a dense urban setting. Living spaces are anchored to the ground plane and open seamlessly outdoors, creating a series of connected spaces that feel open, private and highly resolved.
Every square metre has been carefully considered to balance openness, flexibility and liveability, creating a home designed to evolve over time.
Stay tuned as this one comes to life.
Welcome to Woodlands. 🌳
A collection of 26 architecturally designed homes positioned alongside the Mt Coot-tha bushland, shaped by the surrounding landscape and established character of Chapel Hill. Bold geometric forms, strong gable elements and vertical screening create a contemporary streetscape with a distinct identity - balancing darker recessed forms against lighter cladding elements to break down scale and create depth across the development.
Designed for practical Queensland living, the homes prioritise natural light, ventilation, privacy and seamless indoor-outdoor flow, with carefully planned layouts that maximise liveability, storage and connection to the landscape beyond.
Thoughtfully planned, functional and quietly bold. Interiors to come.

One of our latest projects on the drawing board, set within a beautiful 200-acre parcel of rolling hills and native bushland. Positioned high on the site, the home takes in expansive northern views and a constant connection to its surroundings.
The design is anchored by a strong in-situ concrete spine that establishes the arrival and sets up a clear sequence through the home. From here, the building extends outward- long, low and deliberately orientated to capture light and the surrounding views.
Structure is intentionally expressed. Concrete, stone, corten and charred timber form a raw, grounded palette selected to weather and settle into the site overtime. Expansive glazing blurs the edges, keeping the connection to the land constant. More to come.

A palette grounded in warmth and texture- natural stone, darker timbers and soft, tactile finishes coming together to build depth and a refined curation. It’s less about contrast and more about how everything sits together - layered, considered and quietly resolved.
Early stage testing like this is where the project really starts to take shape. Not just how it looks, but how it will feel to move through- calm, cohesive and intentional. More to come as we start refining each space.

Happy International Women’s Day! 💜
We’re proud to work alongside inspiring women whose creativity, leadership, and perspective help bring every Base Architecture project to life.
Earlier this month, our team attended a Christmas event hosted by Stylecraft Furniture and proudly sponsored by CMS Electracom.
Thank you for the invitation and a fantastic evening, great company, thoughtful details, and a very festive gingerbread house competition (which we were thrilled to win). 🎄
