Over the last few seasons, we have been carefully crafting BASE’s messaging and setting impactful intentions as we continue to grow in size and practice. We first went inwards during the Winter Solstice, inviting our team to bring together examples of their purpose and what inspires them. Then, we looked at our collective work, our firm’s history, and of course—we started thinking about the future. Not just for BASE, but for the land and future generations. The foundation of BASE relies on honoring the land, embracing healing and joy, moving with kindness, and advocacy. We stop, reflect, and take time to honor the seasons. Now we gather to celebrate the Summer Solstice to launch our new mission and vision with the world. Before we share our new mission and vision, swipe through to see more from our team and learn what makes us BASE. #BASE #baselandscape #LandscapeArchitecture #mission #vision #summersolstice #celebration #team #thisislandscapearchitecture #earthbasedpractice #solstice #fullmoon

Announcing our new Mission and Vision! In celebration of the Summer Solstice, we are thrilled to share this new messaging for BASE Landscape Architecture. We aim to highlight our commitment to designing places of peace and tranquility, places of learning and abundance, places to cherish the company of others, and landscapes that respect the authentic beauty and wildness of nature. We intend for these statements to act as a clear representation of our work, and our dedication to building a world that honors all beings. We hope that these words inspire our partners, collaborators, family, friends, other members of the BASE community, and future generations. Pollinator gardens are climate & biodiversity action. A healthy ecosystem can: • Remove CO₂ from the atmosphere • Manage stormwater naturally • Reduce heat and cool communities “By designing habitats for pollinators, we increase plant and wildlife biodiversity in a given area and make food webs and genetic and energy flows more complex, thereby improving ecosystem health.” — MaFe Gonzalez, ASLA, @base_landscape Explore Landscape Architecture 2040: ASLA Climate & Biodiversity Action Plan and tools to bring climate and biodiversity solutions together ⤴ Link in bio Image credit: Dolores Pollinator Boulevard, San Francisco, California. Join us at @lafoundation 's Future Now summit coming up June 4-6 in Detroit! The 'Future Now: Taking Action for People + Planet by Design' Summit affirms the power of collective leadership and collaboration to drive meaningful change. Join LAF and the landscape architecture community as we come together to fortify the work of shaping a future that designs for climate, biodiversity, equity, and inclusion. BASE will be attending and we are excited to share that we will participate in the workshop facilitations and lightning talks that are happening on Day 1 & Day 2 of the summit. On Day 1, Fiwa will give a lightning talk titled, ‘Landscape as Refuge: Care, Comfort, or Exclusion?’ She will share reflections on how people create moments of care, dignity, and refuge in the landscape even within constrained conditions—and what this asks of us as designers working in these contexts. On Day 2, you will find MaFe alongside Fernando Magallanes, James Rojas and Daniel Ortega facilitating the ‘Making Chicano Public Landscapes’ workshop. This session will address the unique challenges to shaping Latino/a/x public spaces and rethink community needs. This workshop will explore Latino/a/x cultural values for decolonized methods and thinking in the evolving study of Latino/a/x urban spatial patterns. Also on Day 2, Patricia, MaFe, Anita Bueno, Adrian Tenney & Javier Ortiz will host the workshop- ‘Life in the Time of ICE: Take Action.’ Join them to learn what you can do to stay safe and help your community during this time of increasing ICE and Border Patrol activity & disruption. This workshop covers individual rights when interacting with federal agents in the workplace and considerations for making a plan in case you or someone you know is detained or arrested. Participants will then put that knowledge into practice through a role-play exercise. We’d love to see you there! Attendees can earn up to 14.75 PDH (LA CES/HSW) by attending a curated selection of keynotes, panels, talks, and workshops over the 2-day summit. Register via LAF’s website before the advanced rate ends on April 30 at /big-ideas/future-now-summit

Check out this interview that @prolandscaperusa did with MaFe 🌟 We indeed love messy gardens, designing having in mind that Nature is also our client, and see landscape architecture as a profession full of hope 💗

In February 2026, we had the opportunity to go to Colombia to explore some landscapes and projects. This trips was Patricia’s first time in the country, and she did indeed a great job visiting a lot of different places, including the main city and remote areas, moving through different habitats and ecosystems, from the Páramos -the summit of the Andes- to the rainforests of the Amazonian foothills. For MaFe, this trips was a beautiful opportunity to bring together two of her worlds: the world of landscape architecture in the US and the world of botany in Colombia. In this post, we want to share our interpretations of the spirit of the place, photos of the spectacular Colombian landscape, and a little bit of our work there. We have some early-stage projects, seeds that we planted during our visit, and we hope will soon begin to germinate and grow! These are projects that fill our hearts and make us feel very fortunate 🌟. In Bogotá, we participated in the Cerros de Bogotá lecture organized by @cerrosdebogota and had the opportunity to met with Diana Wiesner @dianawiesner_ and Diana Salazar, renowned Colombian landscape architects! This was perfect for expanding our Latin Network! Qué siga el Merequetengueo! In Quindío, we visited MaFe’s family, went to the cloud forest, and held a workshop with the children at an elementary school called A 8 manos. In the workshop, we talked about migration, landscape architecture, spirituality and began to dream up a restoration plan for the stream that runs through the school 💚 Thank you for inviting us @aochomanos We spent most of our time in Putumayo. What a magical place! We were enchanted by everything and can’t wait to return. There, we had the opportunity to spend time with wonderful people, visit incredible landscapes, listen to the territory and its communities, and envision two projects we would love to support and work on!

A commemoration, a reminder of how big, how powerful and how strong we are! A celebration for what we have achieved and an acknowledgment of the struggle we carry out daily through our roles and in lives. A minute of silence for those who have lost their lives at the hands of beings who cannot accept that we are not objects, we are not commodities, and we do not have owners! We are free and empowered women, making paths for equity and justice for us and for generations to come. May our hands and hearts never stop creating, transforming, healing and loving!
