Barry Hazard is a Brooklyn based artist who creates sculpture-paintings with heavy relief. The work initiates a conversation about perspective and one’s place within a larger landscape. The work embraces inferences of environmental conflicts associated with a contemporary landscape. Pulling from his extensive knowledge as a carpenter, Barry often builds these sculpture-paintings to extend over 4 feet into the viewer’s space. There is a world-building aspect to the work that allows us to enter Barry’s view of the world we share. His concern and appreciation are evident in the careful detail he takes to show us beauty and anthropogenic change.

My sculpture is called Inner Forest. It sort of came to me after I re-injured my back (old construction injury) and I started reflecting on this idea while I layed on the floor. I was thinking about a paradox, a forest within a tree, and seeing them simultaneously….i was also thinking about inner strength and inner growth and inner harmony. The piece started out kind of simple, but the content got multi-layered and literally heavy… very quickly, which I think it was supposed to without me knowing it. It kind of grew out of my hands and the limits of my mind.
It has a cedar wood frame and marine plywood with an outer foam shell. The center has a sun tube which is what lights up the diorama during the day. 𝘞𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘧𝘢𝘭𝘭 may be one of Barry Hazard’s most delightfully North Carolina-esque wall sculptures. It floated, in its original box, out of the gallery and down the French Broad River during Hurricane Helene. Covered in flood mud, it was miraculously recovered and returned back to us safely intact. We were astonished to discover that the two impossibly miniature figures were still standing at the edge of the waterfall - this time as if they were taking in the real-life devastation of the aftermath of the flood. With the artist’s endorsement, we are keeping it as is, its tiny figures bearing witness to what we endured here in Asheville.
Hazard’s “sculpture-paintings” form a semi-fictional dioramic catalog of humanity’s complex relationship with the environment through the lens of our shared affection for wide-open spaces. The story of this piece re-contextualizes its imagery to embody and record the shock and amazement of witnessing this natural disaster that has so drastically and indelibly changed our Western North Carolina landscape.
𝘞𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘧𝘢𝘭𝘭 is included in our upcoming online art auction, and we hope to find it a new home with people who will cherish it for the very special work of art that it is.
📲 The auction starts at 9AM tomorrow, Sunday March 23, and bidding ends at 8PM EST on Sunday, March 30. 20% of proceeds will be donated to @centerforcraft , who helped us in our time of need after the flood.
