MOTHERFATHER / November 2024 / @asylumstudiosuk
MOTHERFATHER brought together ten artists who are also mothers and fathers, each grappling with the intricate dance of raising and supporting children while sustaining a dynamic creative practice. The exhibition aimed to ignite a conversation about the complexities and rewards of being both a parent and an artist. Exploring how these dual roles intersect, challenge, and ultimately enrich one another, revealing the resilience and adaptability required to thrive in both spheres.

Yellowhammer - a joint exhibition with Max Clements @barerootroses and brought together by @simoncarter11 finishes this Friday at Art:Oasis in Frinton. Check @theartoffrinton for opening times.
Exhibition text:
Yellow is a colour that both artists enjoy in their work; work that evokes natures shapes and rhythms. Clements grew up on the Romney Marsh where fields of yellow oilseed rape pressed the horizon and met with the blue sky. Watkins Jones grew up
on the edge of heathland where the yellow of gorse, broom and yellowhammers opposed the green chain link fencing.
In recalling these they were reminded that personal connections to nature are often deep ones. Visual memory, whether old or new, touches sensibilities and informs how their work takes shape in the studio - echoeing an experience of being out there, surrounded and enveloped by nature.
There are visual similarities between the two artists - colour, texture, pattern and use of oil paint and charcoal to name a few, and some distinct differences - Clements continued exploration of repetition that concomitantly speaks of internal worlds and Watkins Jones’ ontological enquiry into the cultivated and the wild.

“What is it of?”
These paintings have become part of a larger, ongoing body of work that began by accident, made with leftover paint from larger paintings. They’re painted intuitively—more like traces or echoes than planned compositions. Their meanings tend to surface slowly, often weeks later, as I begin to notice forms or rhythms emerging, a bit like a Rorschach test.
These paintings occupy that uncertain space where looking and understanding don’t quite align. I like that they resist the question of “what is it of?”
For me, they’re less about depiction and more about perception—how we search for meaning even when an image or experience won’t fully yield it. Their simplicity is deliberate: it slows the act of seeing, making the surface itself the subject.
I understand why that simplicity can feel unsettling, but for me, restraint is essential. These are quiet acts of painting—concerned less with subject matter than with the process of seeing and perceiving. It’s not about what they show, but how they let looking unfold.
