It all started around 8 years ago. I snuck in the back of the bass section with the
@thehibernianorchestra , hoping no one would notice. My goal was to improve my bass playing (as the bow serves as a sort of intonation truth serum), and to improve my reading. I had barely played a note with the bow on the double bass.
Double bass is my second instrument. I did all of my jazz study on electric, and only really got into double bass as my second instrument for my MA in Luzern in Switzerland.
The Hibernian orchestra play three concerts per year. With covid, I’ve probably played around 15 concerts with Hibs, and every single one of them was a nightmare. 😂 I used to have to put in around 100-130 hours of practise per concert just to play some of the music written down terribly.
Last night’s concert was the second of a trend of me THOROUGHLY enjoying playing with the orchestra. I mean I always enjoyed the people aspect of the orchestra. Hibs is made up of an astoundingly generous, warm, and high performing bunch of people. But at this point I’m also finally enjoying the music so much. I think it’s because my reading is at a level now where I can take more in, and play more of the detail on and off the page. I can listen more/better, and give more from a place of stability vs complete panic, like at the beginning. I love it so much. I love music so much.
Thank you,
@thehibernianorchestra @mairead_hickey_ for bringing beautiful grounded magnificence to our ears as guest soloist and
@nationalconcerthall for having us. On to the next one! 😀
