Toronto, but make it old London after darkšÆļø
Compton Ave genuinely surprised me, not just for the atmosphere, but for how considered the food and drinks were. For the price, the quality you get here makes it absolutely worth a visit, and this easily ranks as one of my top bar experiences in Toronto.
Mocktails:Ā
Jasmine Spritz: floral, crisp, and clean, with jasmine, fennel, seedlip grove, and soda giving it that refreshing highball feel without alcohol. šø
Old Obsession: spirit-free but still layered, with amaretto-style warmth, pandan, and white flower bitters giving it a soft, elegant finish. š
Cocktails:
Umami Old Fashion: one of the most creative cocktails Iāve tried recently. Toki whisky, reduced soy, maple, pandan, and lapsang make it savoury, smoky, lightly sweet, and extremely balanced. š„
Strawberry Cheesecake: playful but not gimmicky, with sherry, strawberry, vanilla, condensed milk, cream cheese, lemon, lime, and whey creating a creamy dessert-style cocktail with real structure. š
Dishes:
Scotch Egg: rich pork, jammy egg, black garlic aioli, and smoked hay all working together for a deep, savoury bite with a proper crispy edge. š„
Grilled Steak Diane: tender picanha with mushrooms, Worcestershire, brandy cream, and apricot. Saucy, rich, and very satisfying without feeling heavy. š„©
Sticky Toffee Pudding: warm, sticky, caramel-heavy, and finished with caraway ice cream, which cuts through the sweetness better than a basic vanilla pairing. š®
What stood out most is that Compton Ave understands both sides of the drink menu. Their cocktails are genuinely creative and well-built, while their mocktails feel just as intentional, which matters when more people are choosing to drink less but still want a proper bar experience. London-inspired, candlelit, dramatic, and actually worth the bill. āØ
