Medusa—she of the snake tresses and stony glare—began life as a beautiful maiden. Her beauty caught the eye of the god Poseidon, who violated her in Athena’s temple. As punishment, Athena transformed Medusa into a man-killing monster. (Oh, the power of men and gods!)
In Istanbul, Greek-era carvings of Medusa were used to help form columns deep underground after the 6th-century Roman Emperor Justinian repurposed the columns to build the Basilica cistern. Below the bustling shops and alleyways of modern Istanbul lie dark pools, the echo of stone, a hushed underworld. In the cistern, a once-innocent maid—now herself morphed into stone—haunts the eternal gloom.
