SHADOWMAN – Richard Hambleton

Commonly known as "The Godfather of Street Art," Canadian artist Richard Hambleton (1952-2017) gained fame for his shadow figures that appeared on the walls of buildings in New York all over the United States. In 1984, Hambleton traveled to Europe five times and passed through 24 major cities to paint his figures in the shadow of the night, including Basel.
Balzer Projects, Artstübli - Urbane Kunst & Kultur and the Estate of Vera Isler (Verein Blaue Blume) are pleased to present a publication on the artist to accompany the exhibition. Published for the first time and in a limited edition are photographs by Vera Isler (1931-2015) and Thomas Christ (*1953) taken in Basel and New York in the early 1980s. The photographs are accompanied by documentary texts by Thomas Christ, Kate Isler, and Isabel Balzer.

Balzer Projects is thrilled to announce its collaboration with Basel gallery "Artstübli – urban art and culture” and "Blaue Blume”, an association dedicated to research and preservation of the estate and archive of Swiss photographer Vera Isler (1931-2015). Together, we are pleased to present the the exhibition of "Shadowman"- photographs by cult urban artist Richard Hambleton (1952- 2017). His rapidly painted shadow figures became icons of urban art in the US and Europe! This exhibition is one of the first in Europe dedicated to Hambleton’s pioneering artistic role. Through the photographic lenses of Vera Isler and Thomas Christ (*1953), this partly documentary exhibition will provide insights into the urban art developments in Basel and New York in the early 1980s. A publication will accompany the show.

Commonly known as "The Godfather of Street Art," Canadian artist Richard Hambleton (1952-2017) gained fame with his rapidly painted shadow figures. In a few seconds, life-size and in sweeping brushstrokes appeared overnight on buildings in New York City. Also known as the Shadowman, Hambleton left behind over 400 of those figures in Manhattan alone! In 1984, he traveled to passing through 24 major cities, including Basel. Again, a bewildered public encountered his signature figures all over metropolitan walls. His fame was accompanied by a drug addition; homelessness, desperation and creative outbursts came in waves. After a short surge of fame in the 2010s, Hambleton died of cancer in 2017 as a broken man.
Artstübli – Urbane Kunst & Kultur, the Estate of Vera Isler and Balzer Projects are pleased to present the exhibition of Shadowman in Basel. On view are photographs by Vera Isler (1931-2015) and Thomas Christ (b. 1953) taken in Basel and New York City in the early 1980s. Their photographs not only show the shadow figures, but also capture the very special and significantly different atmospheres of New York City and Basel in the 1980s.
